Workforce Development and Training.
is past year, Suffolk’s Advanced
Manufacturing Training Center (AMTC), evolved from a grant-funded operation to
a profitable fee-for-service model. As part of this transition, it provides noteworthy
certifications in critical career-path industries, including welding, machining and
soldering. registration for the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center’s first
Advanced welding Program was full, with half of the slots occupied by veterans.
outreach and partnerships are critical to the growth and success of our workforce
training and economic development activities. During this last academic year, the
College hosted an event entitled “e workforce of the future” in conjunction
with the HiA’s education and Manufacturing Committee. HiA Co-Chair and
College Board of Trustee member Anne Shybunko-Moore presided over a panel
discussion between members from business and industry. representatives from
the College, North Shore Health Systems, New York State education Depart-
ment, and east islip School District were in attendance. Nina Leonhardt,
Associate Dean for Continuing education, offered a presentation on the value
of STeM, its impact on business and industry, and the variety of local and
national experiences available to Suffolk students.
Trustee Shybunko-Moore, President of Hauppauge-based GSe Dynamics,
and John Lombardo, Associate vice President for workforce and economic
Development at the College, recently served as panelists and presenters at a
national conference sponsored by the Next Generation Manufacturing
Group, an organization comprised of fortune 50 manufacturers from across
the United States. e panel focused on training the next generation of
manufacturing workers. At the conference, the College received national
recognition for “Leadership in Manufacturing Training.”
in April, AvP Lombardo was a guest speaker at the National Conference
of Manufacturers in Denver. AvP Lombardo joined Trustee Shybunko-
Moore at the conference where they conducted a feature presentation
on the value of education-business collaborations. e national organization
recognized the College for its talent pipeline development, sustainability and
leadership. Companies such as Lockheed Martin, Tiffany and Company, frito-Lay,
Subaru, and Cisco were in attendance.
in May, i joined AvP John Lombardo, and several members of our Board of Trustees
at a SUNY Community College Summit on the future of New York’s workforce.
i took this opportunity to emphasize that an important feature of the College’s
workforce preparation programs is the emphasis that is placed on the liberal arts,
which is the foundation of critical thinking and creative problem solving. is event
was an opportunity for leading business and education leaders across our State to
