James w. Banks, Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs and Associate Professor at
the College, was recognized at the 28th Annual reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial Breakfast, hosted by the first Baptist Church of riverhead. During the
program, Professor Banks received the reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
Meritorious Award for the work he has done for others, giving unselfishly of himself,
and exemplifying the ideals of the late Dr. King. e Suffolk County Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Commission presented its 2013 Public Service Award to Dr. evon
walters for his efforts promoting the principles and philosophies of Dr. King.
During the year, i delivered welcoming remarks at our eastern Campus to kick off
the Custer institute’s 34th Annual Astronomy Jamboree and joined the college
community at a family night of fun with the Long island Ducks, where we
enjoyed a home field playoff game and i threw out the first pitch.
Improved Student Life.
e Ammerman Campus Counseling Center held its
seventh annual Mental Health Awareness Day. over 300 students attended the event
and were provided information on topics such as domestic violence, dealing with
chronic mental illness, suicide prevention, Hiv and mental health, alcohol and drug
abuse, support for sexual orientation, eating disorders, and support for child victims
of physical and sexual abuse. e event was co-sponsored by the Counseling Center
and the office of Campus Activities/Student Leadership Development.
e College has created
Stand Up SCCC
, a college-wide committee that is taking
a stand against bullying and cyberbullying. To encourage
conversations across our campuses and among our student
body, the committee organized an exciting and innovative
program that took place this past semester. Students were
invited to submit creative work to be judged for its success
in expressing how bullying or cyberbullying has touched
their life, how it impacts human dignity, or how they can
take a stand against it. Students were able to submit their
work in numerous mediums, such as drawing, painting,
prints, photography, video, digital or graphic art, sculpture,
written word, and recorded music. e award-winning
work was placed on display on all three campuses. e
College received 44 pieces of artwork from 40 student
artists representing all three campuses. e winners
received Samsung Galaxy tablets and Certificates of
Merit from the College.
e College’s Alpha Delta Gamma (Michael J. Grant
Campus) and Alpha Zeta Nu (Ammerman Campus)
chapters of the Phi eta Kappa Honor Society received
‘ree Star Chapter’ and ‘one Star Chapter’ recognition
respectively, as announced during the Phi eta Kappa
Annual Convention. Phi eta Kappa, the international
Honor Society for two-year colleges, is the largest honor
society in American higher education. Phi eta Kappa’s five Star Chapter
development plan serves as a blueprint for developing strong chapters and
improving student engagement on campus.

“Stand Up SCCC” was a college-wide initiative that fostered
