Noteworthy Scholarship News.
former Student Trustee Anthony Mangual
graduated in May as the most decorated student in our history. During his final year
at the College, he was named an Academic All-USA first Team member. in addition,
he was selected as a recipient of a 2013 Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from e
Jack Kent Cooke foundation, which will provide him with a scholarship that covers
tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for up to a total of $30,000 annually, for up
to three years. e Jack Kent Cooke foundation Scholarship is the largest private
scholarship awarded to community college transfer students in the country. is year,
the foundation received 769 nominations from 377 community colleges and awarded
73 scholarships. is is the College’s eighth Jack Kent Cooke Scholar in its history.
Trustee Mangual was also named New York State’s New Century Scholar, the accolade
awarded to the single highest scoring student in each state. e last time a Suffolk
student earned this prestigious award was in 2009. As the statewide recipient, he was
honored at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention
in April in San francisco, where i was able to join him along with our BoT
Chairwoman, Dafny irizarry. As a New Century Scholar, he represented all community
college students from New York State at the AACC opening Ceremonies, and was
honored at a special reception and at the Annual President’s Breakfast. Trustee
Mangual also received a Chancellor’s Award for Student excellence from the State
University of New York (SUNY) and was a recipient of a Suffolk Community College
foundation Get ere from Here Scholarship. Among his other accomplishments,
Trustee Mangual was President of the Business Club on the Michael J. Grant
Campus, a member of Phi eta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma Honor Societies
and selected for who’s who Among Students in Universities and Colleges. He will
attend Hofstra University and plans to pursue a degree in law, subsequent to
completing a Certified Public Accountancy program.
for the 2013-2014 academic year, the Scholarship Committee of the foundation
Board of Directors has approved a total budget of $245,012 to fund the Get ere
from Here scholarship program. e amount that has been designated will enable the
College to add approximately 30 new Get ere from Here scholars and extend
funding for the 23 existing scholars who are continuing their studies next semester.
i thank the foundation Board for its noteworthy stewardship of this important
program. Based on their applications and interviews, it is clear that the students are
strong academically and have been able to persevere through many challenges. over
115 applications were received for this year’s round of funding. is response is more
than double the number of applications we received last year.
Christopher Petrosino was selected as one of only twenty students in the nation to
receive Phi eta Kappa’s 2012 frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship. e frank Lanza
Memorial Scholarship recognizes the outstanding academic and leadership
accomplishments of students enrolled in registered nursing, respiratory care or
emergency medical services associate degree programs. As a 2012 Lanza Scholar,
Mr. Petrosino received a $2,500 scholarship and a commemorative certificate.
ree students, Dilek Kucuk, Jieyi Guan and Saida Mohibi received Dr. robert frey
family foundation Scholarships. ese scholarships are awarded to students who are
majoring in mathematics or planning to embark on a career in a math-related field.
Student applicants must have earned at least 32 college credits and have a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.5. is year, each student received a $5,000 scholarship. in
addition, Ms. Kucuk received the 2013 New York State Mathematics Association of
