Scott Mandia, Professor of earth and Space Science, represented Suffolk County
Community College and the Climate Science rapid response Team as a viP guest of
former U.S. vice President Al Gore during a three-day Climate reality Training
workshop in San francisco. in attendance were individuals from 46 states and more
than 60 countries. Professor Mandia delivered a 40-minute presentation about the
Climate Science rapid response Team. Professor Mandia was also named as a Science
Advisor and invited to sit at Al Gore’s viP table.
faculty members Neil Buffett (instructor in Social Sciences) and Dr. Sarah Grunder
(Assistant Professor of Social Sciences) from our Ammerman Campus, have been
selected to participate in the American Historical Association’s “American History,
Atlantic and Pacific” project. e project is a National endowment for the
Humanities “Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges” project that will bring
together community college faculty from 12 institutions around the country to create
or revise courses in an effort to promote a global perspective on U.S. history.
Acting executive Dean for the Ammerman Campus George Tvelia, was chosen for
the inaugural class of awardees to receive international recognition in the form of the
2012 John and Suanne roueche excellence Award, presented by the League for
innovation. He is one of only two recipients in New York State. ese awards are
open to League alliance member institutions and are presented to celebrate
outstanding contributions and leadership by community college faculty and staff.
Professor Kevin Peterman received the Higher education Member of the Year Award
from the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). e award is presented in
recognition of his years of service, including his longstanding membership and his
participation in the leadership of the faculty Association.

SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student excellence. Six Suffolk County Community
College students were selected for the Phi eta Kappa All-New York Academic
Teams: four to the first Team, and one each to the Second and ird teams. ree of

Tara fagan was selected from among 1,700 campuses nationwide to be honored as a
member of the inaugural class of Campus event Planner awardees. is award honors
Tara’s hard work and dedication put forth creating memorable campus activities and
events for our students during 2012.
Asya Ashour, an accounting major with a perfect 4.0 GPA and a history of
community service, was the valedictorian of the LiU Post Class of 2013. Ashour
attended LiU Post as a transfer student with a pre-accounting degree from Suffolk
County Community College. Upon earning her associate degree, she was awarded a
full tuition scholarship to LiU through the “Stay on Long island” scholarship
initiative.
Assistant Dean for faculty and Professional Advancement Pina Arcomano Britton
was honored with a 2012 North American Council for Staff, Program and
organizational Development (NCSPoD) exemplar Award for outstanding
achievement in professional development.
Nancy ellis, Professor of Paralegal Studies at the College, received a Leadership in Law
