Transfer Services

Counselors are available on each campus to assist students with the process of transferring to a four-year college. This may involve identifying possible transfer colleges, collecting detailed information, and developing a plan of action.
Specific services include:

  • individual counseling
  • transfer days – with numerous colleges represented on campus
  • internet access to transfer college information
  • applications to select local and SUNY colleges
  • college search guides

If you're planning to transfer to a four-year college:

  1. Make an appointment with a transfer counselor in the Counseling Center.
  2. Determine what's important to you in selecting a transfer college:
    • public vs. private
    • cost
    • location
    • program availability
    • selectivity
  3. Identify alternative transfer colleges:
    • research their strengths and weaknesses
    • talk to counselors, faculty, your academic advisor, and other students
    • use internet search programs
    • read college guidebooks
    • call and request a college catalog and application materials
  4. Narrow your choices down to 2-4 colleges and investigate them further:
    • visit the transfer college(s) and take a tour
    • talk to an admissions counselor, inquire about transfer credit and transfer scholarships (bring a transcript)
    • talk to current and former students
    • talk to faculty in your program area
  5. If letters of recommendation are needed, make the appropriate arrangements with faculty and administrators who know you well and are likely to write the strongest letters on your behalf.
  6. Apply for admission well in advance of any application deadlines.
  7. Apply for financial aid as soon as you have narrowed down your choices to a reasonable number.
  8. Make arrangements to have your official transcript sent.
  9. Follow up with the Admissions Office at the transfer college to make sure they have received your application and transcripts.
