Transfer Services
Counselors are available on each campus to assist students with the process of transferring to a four-year college. This may involve identifying possible transfer colleges, collecting detailed information, and developing a plan of action.
Specific services include:
- individual counseling
- transfer days – with numerous colleges represented on campus
- internet access to transfer college information
- applications to select local and SUNY colleges
- college search guides
If you're planning to transfer to a four-year college:
- Make an appointment with a transfer counselor in the Counseling Center.
- Determine what's important to you in selecting a transfer college:
- public vs. private
- cost
- location
- program availability
- selectivity
- Identify alternative transfer colleges:
- research their strengths and weaknesses
- talk to counselors, faculty, your academic advisor, and other students
- use internet search programs
- read college guidebooks
- call and request a college catalog and application materials
- Narrow your choices down to 2-4 colleges and investigate them further:
- visit the transfer college(s) and take a tour
- talk to an admissions counselor, inquire about transfer credit and transfer scholarships (bring a transcript)
- talk to current and former students
- talk to faculty in your program area
- If letters of recommendation are needed, make the appropriate arrangements with faculty and administrators who know you well and are likely to write the strongest letters on your behalf.
- Apply for admission well in advance of any application deadlines.
- Apply for financial aid as soon as you have narrowed down your choices to a reasonable number.
- Make arrangements to have your official transcript sent.
- Follow up with the Admissions Office at the transfer college to make sure they have received your application and transcripts.
