Message from the President
Since i became the President of Suffolk County Community College, i have consistently
shared my belief that education transforms lives by empowering individuals. Now, as
i conclude my sixth year of leadership, it is clear to me that this latest report of annual
accomplishments reflects our College’s success in building upon the work of prior years.
Specifically, it underscores the institutional strength that has emerged from multiple years
of prudent management decisions—both fiscal and operational—as well as our attention
to foundational elements, such as being able to demonstrate organizational success in
planning and assessment, and in proving continued progress toward our mission with the
passage of each year.
Such efforts have already led to noteworthy results in our accreditation activities and the implementation of numerous
improvements throughout our institution and across our campuses. By accepting change, our College has become more
dynamic than at any other time in its history. we continue to keep our academic programs and student services fresh, we
continue to attract donors to our foundation, we continue to improve and build necessary facilities—all of which leads to
lives being transformed by our College. Now, as we conclude our 56
th
academic year, it is clear that we have, and will
continue to, set the standard for defining an exceptional community college. Today, we stand as a shining example of how
an engaged community can demonstrate a clear connection between the things valued most in its work, and the effort being
put forth by each individual every day.
During the forthcoming year, our institutional journey will continue through various discussions that will be held as part
of our Middle States Self-Study, Achieving the Dream, and SUNY excels. rough these different, yet linked, conversations,
we anticipate bringing added clarity to the ideal for all of our students—to see them reach their educational goals of transfer,
career training, or graduation, having learned and gained knowledge. As President, i must push all of us, constantly, closer
to this ideal. is is some of the most important work we can do, as these conversations go to the core of our mission and the
center of our strategic intentions.
without the incredible work and dedication of our faculty, staff and administrators, as well as support from County
and State legislators and our Board of Trustees, none of this success would be possible. i extend my deepest appreciation to
each individual for contributing to our work in a manner that has brought our institution to such a noteworthy level. is
has been another fantastic year of accomplishments and the progress we have made has further enhanced our institution’s
reputation. i will continue to work with all of our partners, providing the presidential leadership required to ensure that the
transformational power of education can continue to enrich the lives of all Suffolk County Community College students
well into the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shaun L. McKay
President
