On Campus
Students looking to work on campus should first check with Financial Aid to see if they are qualified to participate in the Federal Work Study Program. If you are awarded an award then you can visit the Career Services Office and begin the process of finding employment in one of the many campus offices and departments.
In addition, students should check with their campus Book Store to inquire about possible positions; and ask their cafeteria services if they have any openings. There are some departments that may hire academic tutors so if your grades are strong, you may want to contact the academic departments directly.
Off Campus
If you are looking for employment opportunities off campus, then visit Suffolk Job Connection through MySCCC student portal and click on the designated box. In addition, use some of the Career Links for additional job information. To gain access to this program, you must login to your student portal.
Suffolk’s Job Connection
Introduction: Suffolk’s Job Connection, an online job listing database, offers students and alumni an opportunity to consider their interests and abilities and identify the job categories that best match their skills, review the list of potential prospects, and browse through the jobs that fit your needs.
Always make sure that you are capable of performing the job that is being advertised and that you meet their qualifications. In addition, make sure that you are able to work the hours designated on the job listings.
Before you call or follow-up, be sure to read and follow the directions for application as outlined by the employer, practice what you would like to say about your skills and abilities to persuade them to give you an interview, and remember to prepare for this opportunity.
Jobs posted on the Job Connection are listed for approximately 60 days and are removed at the end of that time frame if the position is filled. If not, it will continue to be posted.
Job Search Tips
For a successful job search, it is important to keep several things in mind:
- An employer is going to want the best candidate he/she can get so make sure you have done your homework and you know something about the organization you are applying for. Learn about the employer and check their website.
- Communication skills is the number one ability employers look for so make sure that you practice what you want to say about your skills and abilities and how they fit with the job. Speak clearly and distinctly.
- Many employers are now requesting resumes from college students. Make it a priority to have an up-to-date resume that has been reviewed by the Career Services Office for the best impression. Always make sure that you prepare a resume that is error free and relevant to the position you are applying for.
- Once you have applied, follow-up to make sure that they received your application and/or resume, ask about the interviewing process, and the next step to follow.
- Remember to dress appropriately for the job interview – neat and presentable.
- Again follow-up in a professional manner if you do not hear from them in a timely basis.
