we were the only community college among 11 institutions to receive recognition in
this category. Some of the other institutions acknowledged within this category were:
North Carolina State University, Columbia University Science and engineering
Library, oregon State University, and old Dominion University.
e College completed major technological enhancements to the field House in the
Health, Sports and education Center (HS&e) on the Michael J. Grant Campus.
ese changes make the facility an unparalleled venue for both internal and external
events and shows in our region. e 60,000 square-foot HS&e is the largest
unobstructed exhibition facility on Long island and has hosted numerous
community-based events including: the L.i. Pet expo, Hauppauge industrial
Association (HiA) Trade Show, Suffolk County Track Championships, and Special
olympics. e facility received a comprehensive acoustic and engineering analysis
resulting in significant enhancements over the past year. An advanced, customized
speaker system now delivers dynamic sound that fully covers the entire floor space.
it also allows for a multitude of facility set-ups to accommodate different sized events
in various locations of the building, remotely managed from an iPad or laptop. New
baffles and sound boards also contribute to the state-of-the-art sound system; while
digital sound panels are now able to be remotely managed. e Lecture Hall, which is
adjacent to the HS&e, also received a comprehensive audio and visual analysis. is
review led to a newly installed surround-sound system that can dynamically change
acoustic ambiance depending upon the needs of the event. it includes a central source
for all controls and a specialized webcam system that offers video conferencing
capabilities internally at SCCC or with an external source.
Improved Student Life.
in the Spring, we held a college-wide event to combat
bullying and cyberbullying. e event took place on the Michael J. Grant Campus in
Brentwood and was simulcast to the Ammerman and eastern campuses. e forum
offered faculty and student discussion, prevention and reporting information, as well
as steps students can take if they are being bullied or witness bullying. After the event,
an anti-bullying pledge was placed on the College’s facebook page for students to sign
and a new College policy was developed and advanced to the Board of Trustees for
consideration and approval.
e eastern Campus is completing space renovations to conclude its proposed
one-Stop Center. when implemented, this project will centralize the on-campus
student support services and move the student enrollment experience into one
location, instead of the current model which can consist of six or more different stops
for our students.
we have also expanded the presence of closed circuit digital televisions displaying
information regarding campus activities, college events and in-building emergency
notifications on each campus to enhance our safety and security operations.
Stay on Long Island.
To help ensure that our graduates remain on Long island
after they complete their education at Suffolk and to increase the likelihood that they
will stay in our region and contribute their skills toward enhancing the local economy,
i launched the Stay on Long island initiative in 2010. Since that time, we have been
able to provide full- and partial-tuition scholarships to graduating Suffolk students
who transfer to one of our 11 partnering four-year schools on Long island. is
program has awarded approximately $1 million in scholarship support for the best
and brightest students graduating from Suffolk.
As part of this initiative, the College hosted the first Scholar-to-Scholar Symposium
