During the past year, i was invited to participate on a number of major national
panels: during the American Council on education (ACe) Annual Conference, the
panel topic entitled “American College Presidents” featured presidents recognized
nationally for their work; at the American Association of Community Colleges
(AACC) Presidents Academy Summer institute, the panel topic was contracts and
negotiations; at SUNY’s
Critical Issues in Higher Education Conference
, themed
Universities as Economic Drivers: Measuring and Building Success
, i facilitated
“Comparing the workforce we Have, with the one we Need”; on a Special feature
Presentation at the Annual National Conference on race & ethnicity in American
Higher education (NCore 2012), where we discussed the role of community
colleges in serving half of all higher education students and more African Americans,
Latinos, Native Americans, and immigrants than any other sector of higher education.
we also focused on workforce and economic development and the establishment of
successful partnerships with the K-12 and university systems to ensure student success.
e Kennedy Center American College eatre (KCACTf) selected
e Icarus Project
,
an original work produced by the eatres at Suffolk County Community College, to
be showcased at its region i festival in Massachusetts. As it was chosen to represent
the New england region,
e Icarus Project
was seen in its entirety as the closing
performance of the festival. Approximately 60 of Suffolk’s students and faculty
attended the festival to perform in the production. KCACTf is a national theater
program involving a network of 600 academic institutions throughout the country,
where theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside
assessment by KCACTf.
e Long island Shakespeare festival presented an abridged version of Macbeth
during a series of free public performances on the grounds of the islip Arts Building at
the College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden. i was honored to appear as Hecate in a
special fundraising appearance.
Under current law, New York State prohibits undocumented immigrant students from
receiving State financial aid in the form of student loans and funding through the
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). e law does allow these individuals to enroll in
institutions of public higher education and, if they meet other residency standards
