XST003 YOUR HOME OR COMMUNITY ORGANIC

Tuition $39.00

VEGETABLE GARDEN

This is the first of a series of courses to prepare for your own home or a community garden.

The emphasis of this series is to use natural methods that are chemical free for organic

gardening. This course will cover what “organic” gardening really means; timelines; companion

planting; garden design; and using a community plot for best results. (1 meeting)

XST004 SEED, GERMINATION OF SEED AND PROPAGATION Tuition $39.00

Propagation can come from seeds, cuttings, roots and leaves. Participants will complete a

propagation project to begin their garden which will include germinating alfalfa sprouts, (to be

harvested within one week); propagating seeds in jiffy pellets; and rooting various plant parts.

The final discussion will center on world seed banks the history behinds different seed species.

XST005 SOIL, WATER AND CLIMATE

Tuition $39.00

Bring a soil sample to class and use simple and natural methods to test for composition and

nutrients. Learn how to amend soil to correct soil imbalances. Participants will learn the most

efficient and effective way to water a garden using the least amount of water and develop a

climate-friendly garden. (1 meeting)

XST006 POLLINATION INSECTS AND DISEASES

Tuition $39.00

Pollination is essential for any garden. Bees, butterflies, and other insects play the role of

pollinating. Disease and insect problems and organic solutions will be discussed. Guest

speakers will be invited and Mason Bee Houses will be distributed for use in the garden.

XST009 SUMMER HARVEST AT THE CULINARYARTS CENTER Tuition $39.00

A portion of the vegetation that is propagated, germinated, pollinated and planted in our

Eastern Campus Garden will be harvested in late summer and a harvest meal will be planned

and prepared and enjoyed by participants at the Culinary Arts Center. (1 meeting)

XDT100-XDT200 DRIVER AND TRAFFIC SAFETY EDUCATION

Suffolk County Community College offers high school students a non-credit, state-certified

Driver and Traffic Safety Education course. Those who successfully complete the course will

receive the MV-285 “Student Certificate Completion” issued by the Motor Vehicle Department.

Those who receive a“MV-285” will be eligible for a rate reduction in their automobile insurance

and a senior license at the age of 17. This course will be offered on the Ammerman Campus in

Selden, the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, and the Eastern Campus in Riverhead. To

receive an application, please call the Office for Continuing Education at 631-451-4399.
