Student Journalists and Our College Newspapers Garner Press Club of LI Honors

Suffolk County Community College student journalists from the Compass News (Ammerman Campus) and the Western Student Press (Michael J. Grant Campus) were honored by the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) at its annual Journalism Awards Dinner on June 5.

 

Compass News placed third as best overall Long Island college newspaper paper.

 

Compass News Editor-in-Chief Kevin Furey placed second for best Narrative - College News Story for his article entitled Student Loan Interest Rates Double.

 

At the Western Student Press, Editor-in-Chief Amanda Koscik placed second as Best College News Reporter for three stories she wrote including:

• SCCC Accreditation Warning: Not Unusual

• 2013 Special Olympics: Unprecedented Event Unites Long Island and SCCC Community

• Anthony Mangual: Breaking the Mold

Williams Perez placed first and second for Visual Illustration for his Student Life cover designs for the February and December 2013 issues.

 

Attending the awards dinner was: Compass News Sports Editor Joshua Blake who will be attending SUNY Stony Brook in the fall; Compass News Editor-in-Chief Kevin Furey who will be attending SUNY Albany in the fall; Compass News Managing Editor (and incoming Editor-in-Chief) Raymond Page; Faculty Advisor Professor Anita Leibowitz; Western Student Press reporter (and incoming Editor-in-Chief) Victoria Lohwasser; Western Student Press Managing Editor Maryam Rabbani who will be attending New York Institute of Technology in the fall; Western Student Press Editor-in-Chief Amanda Koscik who will be attending New York University - Tisch School of the Arts in the fall; and Western Student Press graphic artist Williams Perez.
