Eastern Campus Health and Wellness Center Given OK By Suffolk Legislature

Construction of a new Health and Wellness facility on the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College that will provide space for physical education classes and includes a basketball court, locker rooms, showers, faculty offices, strength training, aerobics, a competition-size swimming pool, rock climbing wall and nursing classrooms was given the green light by the Suffolk County Legislature at its May 13 meeting.

The $17.75 million facility, 50 percent of which was funded by New York State, will provide conference and show space for local businesses and industry, will be available to the surrounding community and will allow the Eastern Campus to serve as a complete academic and conference center for eastern Suffolk County.

“This is a great moment for our college and all of eastern Suffolk County,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, who explained that without the new facility it has been difficult for students to meet physical education requirements. “Weather, the amount of daylight during winter months and available classroom space all limited our physical education course selections,” McKay explained.

“This is of tremendous value to east end residents,” McKay continued, “many of whom travel with their young children to our Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood to use our athletic facilities for swim lessons and summer camps.” McKay said that eastern Long Island police and fire departments that now travel to the college’s Brentwood pool for water certifications will now be able to use the new, closer facility.”

“I thank the Suffolk County Legislature and New York State Legislators Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele for their support on this important project for our students and the residents of the east end of Long Island,” McKay concluded. Construction of the new facility is expected to begin later this year.
