Announcement is hereby made for a 12-month, full-time, Professional Assistant  (PA) for Information Technology Services, Department of Desktop Support Services (Central) located on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.  Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.


This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.


Job Description

The Professional Assistant will be responsible for maintenance, installation and deployment of hardware (desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, and other academic-centric technology) and software. Additionally, the Professional Assistant will assist in technology and departmental moves on or between campuses. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:  


  • Repair of computers and laser printers. Provide end-user technical support. Install and troubleshoot software (operating systems and applications). 
  • Install new software releases and upgrades including Windows operating system, MS Office and other applications. 
  • Perform hardware replacements.
  • Activate and configure vPro settings, enable device encryption, and maintain endpoint protection software.
  • Diagnose common network issues.
  • Consistent and comprehensive use of the ITSM tool for tracking tasks, resolution of issues and communication with end-users.
  • Keep accurate documentation for tracking asset inventory.
  • Provide guidance on proper digital storage and sharing of files per college standards.
  • Maintain professional and neat decorum of end user computing space when working at employee’s workspace or during or after a technology move.
  • Professionally respond to college technology-based emergencies and work under pressure.
  • Document inventory changes and report accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Keep abreast of training trends, developments, and best practices. 
  • Perform project-oriented tasks that must meet schedule-based deliverables.
  • Ability to both independently research technical issues and collaborate with peers to resolve problems.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with team and department colleagues, students, staff, and administration across the college.
  • Must demonstrate exceptional and consistent verbal and written communications.
  • Must exhibit exceptional customer support and service delivery skills.
  • Capability of providing support for campus and college-wide events when needed.
  • All other duties as assigned by the College Director, Service Delivery and IT Compliance 


  • An Associate Degree from an accredited institution. An Associate Degree in Computer Science/Information Systems from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Higher Education experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of prior experience as a Desktop Support professional, with a strong background in deployment services and user support field services.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds; carry laser printers; and the ability to work in tight spaces.
  • Valid driver’s license; may be required to drive a college vehicle to other campuses to service equipment and software. 


The exact salary will be determined by prior teaching experience and placement on the salary scale negotiated by the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College.
