Announcement is hereby made for a full-time, 12-month, Specialist I position in the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness located on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.


This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.


Job Description:

As part of the OPIE team, the Specialist supports institutional efforts to enhance data-driven decision-making at the college. The person in this position will be responsible for research, analysis, report writing, data interpretation, and working toward greater transparency of data resources for all stakeholders.  The person must be capable of writing and validating simple and complex queries to extract data from ODS using SPSS and Oracle SQL Developer, manipulating and analyzing data, and supporting a wide variety of requests for information.

The incumbent will play an integral role in developing datasets to support the institutional research function at the college, and is expected to provide technical support of associated reporting tools, resources and applications such as SPSS programming and Oracle SQL Developer. The person in this position will work with the abovementioned applications to produce reliable, accurate, and dependable information. The Specialist will collaborate with staff of the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness and its clients to help fulfill reporting requirements, evaluate and address internal data needs, and support the daily operations of IR.

In addition to dataset development, the Specialist will be expected to produce code to extract data using Oracle SQL Developer, either on an ad hoc basis or as fully-developed end user reports or dashboards. Additional requirements include: development and maintenance of external datasets; data forensic/integrity analysis; assistance in developing report specifications; extracting data for college-wide requests related to Program Review, accreditation, and ad hoc committees; assisting with the extracting of data for state and federal reports, including IPEDS and SUNY reports, among others; and other duties related to Institutional Research.

The Specialist will be expected to possess an understanding of internal and external reporting requirements, college operational guidelines and policies, and Suffolk County Community College's data management systems.



  • A Bachelor’s Degree in statistics, mathematics, computer applications, business, social sciences or related field requiring coursework in quantitative analysis is required. A Master’s Degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, research, writing, and communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SQL, SPSS programming, MS Access, and Excel.
  • Experience with Banner and ODS preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently while managing short-term and long-term projects to meet deadlines.
  • Proven competency in the technical aspects of general and survey research, including research purpose and design, statistical and research methods, data collection and/or extraction, and data analysis and evaluation.
  • Awareness and understanding of institutional effectiveness and learning and service outcomes assessment in higher education.
  • Experience and proficiency with statistics, quantitative data analysis including multivariate techniques, and forecasting methods, such as those used in enrollment projection modeling.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving skills, and be able to quickly grasp complex systems.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to retrieve, compile and analyze data to meet operational, institutional, and assist with external requirements covering student, faculty, courses, programs, assessment, demographics, and other factors as requested.
  • Ability to convert complex data findings into understandable and accurate tables, graphs, written reports and presentations for end-users.
  • Ability to collaborate with the OPIE team and appropriate institutional partners to design, create, test, and maintain dashboards, reports and queries to support data-informed decision-making, strategic planning, enrollment management, target marketing, resource development, and college-wide process improvement.
  • Proven ability to foster ongoing collaboration and communication with college-wide stakeholders to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality deliverables.
  • Knowledge and understanding of higher education reporting requirements (federal and state).
  • Experience with support of Academic Program and Administrative Unit Review and annual academic assessments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, efficient, personable, and collegial working relationships with a diverse and multi-cultural student body, staff and administration in a multi-campus setting.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and institutional materials.


The exact salary will be determined by prior experience and placement on the salary scale negotiated by the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College
