TITLE: Assistant Director of Plant Operations

CAMPUS: Ammerman Campus in Selden



Announcement is hereby made for a full-time, 12-month Assistant Director of Plant Operations position beginning immediately on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.  Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs. 


This is a Guild (Unit 4) position, and, as such, the salary and benefits for this position are determined according to the salary and benefits plan for the Guild of Administrative Officers. 


Job Description 

The Assistant Director of Plant Operations reports to the Campus Director of Plant Operations and is primarily responsible for supervision of the grounds, auto and mechanical staff, the oversight of building systems, preventive maintenance and construction projects.

  • Supervises, schedules and assigns work to various skilled tradesmen and laborers performing building maintenance and repair and grounds maintenance work; inspects work in progress and completed work for compliance with specifications and work orders.
  • Maintains records including work orders, equipment, and supply records, and employee records.
  • Provides training and on-the-job guidance and assistance on the proper methods, techniques, tools and equipment and safety precautions to be observed by staff involved in construction, renovation, repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Conducts inspections of buildings and grounds to determine and estimate costs of repairs and maintenance needed.
  • Receives emergency maintenance calls; conducts on site review of the emergency; establishes work priorities and assigns employees to accomplish necessary repairs. Has on-call hours.
  • Be a first supervisory responder and escalates issues as necessary to the Campus Director of Plant Operations.
  • Prepares budgets and purchase requests and ensures budgetary compliance.
  • Works with faculty, student and campus administrative committees to facilitate campus programs. This could include serving on appropriate campus and/or college committees.
  • Assists with the planning and implantation or arrangements for special programs for business, industry and local community groups.
  •  Performs other related duties as assigned by the Campus Director of Plant Operations. 
  • This position requires flexible hours with some weekend supervision.



10 years of supervisory experience in mechanical maintenance and grounds operations, with at least 3 years of experience in operations and maintenance of large facilities is required. Must be able to prioritize and lead work on multiple projects.  Candidate must have strong communication, computer, and analytical skills.


Preferred Qualifications

An Associate Degree/trade school training in a related field is strongly preferred. Previous maintenance experience in an educational environment. Union experience is strongly preferred.    

Special Notes: This position has been deemed essential for the operation of the College. As such, this incumbent will be required to report to work and schedule adequate staffing in the event of: inclement weather, maintenance emergencies, and unplanned events that may impede the standard operations of the college.
