POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 22,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as its Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead. Established in 1959, the College offers a wide array of transfer-oriented associate degrees in the liberal arts and sciences; business; communications and the arts; computing and cybersecurity; health sciences; and many other areas. Career-facing degrees and certificates are offered in allied health professions, automotive technology, culinary and baking, manufacturing, and many other areas. The college provides high school concurrent enrollment opportunities to thousands of students each year through both the New York Beacon program and through on-campus early college classes. Designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution, Suffolk enrolls thousands of students in English Language Learning courses, and also serves more service veterans and military-connected students than any other college in the SUNY system.

 

Announcement is hereby made for a full-time temporary Counselor position beginning immediately and ending on December 31, 2025 on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.

 

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.

 

Job Description:

  • Provides services and intervention to students with disabilities pertaining to their academic, educational and personal concerns
  • Reviews and evaluates assessment and diagnostic information to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations and other needs
  • Provides liaison and consultation services for faculty regarding the coordinated delivery of services to meet the educational needs of students with disabilities and works with faculty to resolve academic accommodations and/or disability management concerns
  • Maintains up-to-date understanding of legislation relevant to students with disabilities including section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act and serves as a campus resource for this information
  • Maintains accurate, confidential student records, utilizing an electronic database, individual student file(s), and students’ accommodation forms
  • Develops and maintains a referral resource network to appropriate community agencies including ACCES-VR and CBVH

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling or Social Work;

 

Preferred

  • A minimum of Two (2) years of experience working directly with students with disabilities in a higher education setting;
  • Experience must include interpretation of pertinent academic records (i.e., IEP reports), determination of reasonable accommodations, academic advisement, and managing a diverse case load.

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.
