POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk County Community College has received a grant to implement a SUNY ASAP Student program. The Suffolk Advancing Success in Associate Pathways (ASAP) program provides direct support to students that promotes retention and academic success.  This program is designed to increase timely graduation rates by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that may affect students. The Suffolk ASAP program includes comprehensive advisement, financial incentives including tuition waivers for financial-aid-eligible students, yearly textbook assistance, and transportation support. This is a 1-year, grant-funded position that may be renewed.

 

The college is currently seeking a 12-month, full-time, temporary grant-funded Advisor to serve in this college-wide position. This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.

 

The Suffolk ASAP Advisor is expected to meet with students across the three campuses in support of the recruitment and retention goals set by the State University of New York and the ASAP replication grant. The Suffolk ASAP Advisor is a member of an integrated college-wide team providing individual academic and personal support to ASAP students as they progress through the program. This position will report to the Project Director for the Suffolk ASAP Program. 

 

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include the following: 

  • Delivers comprehensive advisement support services to ASAP students through degree completion; 
  • Reviews ASAP student’s progress and tracks student’s use of academic support services; 
  • Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success; 
  • Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each ASAP student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs; 
  • Supports annual recruitment of new students into the ASAP program and may be assigned to attend recruitment events; 
  • Organizes periodic special events and programs for ASAP students, faculty and staff; 
  • Assigned to teach ASAP Student college seminars; 
  • Completes intake interviews for all new admits to the Suffolk ASAP program; 
  • Conducts bi-weekly advising/counseling sessions with each new student during their first semester;  
  • Conducts monthly or as needed advising/counseling sessions with continuing students each semester;  
  • Makes referrals for ASAP students to appropriate college departments and outside agencies; 
  • Works with ASAP students on campuses for involvement in leadership and diversity programming;  
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Suffolk ASAP Project Director.  


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or a closely related field;
  • Two (2) years of experience working directly with students in a higher education setting;
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills and computer literacy.

Preferred

  • Experience in college advisement, enrollment and recruitment.
  • Strong understanding of the needs of freshmen and transfer college students.
  • Experience teaching College First Year Experience course. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty and administrators.
  • Strong organization, project management and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English


HIRING SALARY:

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the college.
