POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and primarily serves an audience of more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County.  The region benefits from an exceptionally high quality of life, with access to world-class arts, sports, New York City, and the natural resources of Long Island.

SUNY Suffolk is searching for a full-time, 10-month tenure-track faculty Instructor/Assistant Professor of Automotive Technology beginning in the Fall 2024 semester, at the Ammerman Campus in Selden.

The Department of Automotive Technology currently supports multiple certificate and degree programs which include corporate sponsored programs that grant industry recognized credentials. The partnerships include the General Motors ASEP, Toyota T-TEN, Honda PACT, Nissan Technician Training Academy, MOPAR CAP, Subaru University and Mercedes Benz Campus, programs, and a general automotive track.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning and delivering high-quality student-centered instruction appropriate to an open-access community college.
  • Participating in curricular development, assessment, and revision at the course, discipline, and program levels, including assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Acquiring and maintaining automotive training and certification as required for certification as an instructor in our manufacturer programs.
  • Attending program conferences and training courses, sometimes out of state, as required for certification as an instructor in our manufacturer programs.
  • Engaging in assessment of college-wide learning outcomes and demonstrating the use of the results of these assessments in courses.
  • Ensuring that principles of equity and inclusion are integrated in curriculum and instructional practice.
  • Ensuring that student knowledge, skills and abilities are aligned with current academic and workforce best practices.
  • Incorporating engaging and appropriate academic technology into all modes of instructional delivery.
  • Maintaining a commitment to ongoing and research-based professional development in pedagogy and subject matter.
  • Teaching assigned courses in accordance with description published in the college catalog and the approved course outline. 
  • Providing academic advising and actively participating in college-wide recruitment, student engagement and retention strategies (e.g. early alerts).
  • Scheduling required time to meet with students outside of class.
  • Actively participating in departmental, campus and college committees/meetings.
  • Participating actively in the life of their department, home campus, and the college.
  • Fulfilling all contractual requirements related to faculty.
  • Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Required

  • Associate Degree
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as an automotive technician in a new car dealership or repair facility
  • ASE Master (A1-A8) certifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity and student success
  • Familiarity with a learning management system and/or willingness to use the college’s LMS (i.e. Brightspace)

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master certification or equivalent in one of the following brands: Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes Nissan, Stellantis, Subaru, or Toyota
  • ASE G1, L1, L3 and L4 Certification
  • Community college teaching experience
  • Experience teaching face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or blended learning

HIRING SALARY:

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.
