Help Topics

  • Just type the keyword(s) you are looking for in the textbox and click  [Search] button.
You can search the college website for the following types of documents:
    • All webpages (extension: htm, html, asp, pl, cgi, etc.)
    • Adobe PDF files (extension: pdf)
    • Microsoft Word files (extension: doc)
    • Plain text files (extension: txt)

  • Some very common words (e.g. "and", "for", "now", etc.), as well as all one-letter-only words will be ignored.

  • SCCC Search is case insensitive - you will receive the same results if you type "JOB", "jOb", "JOb", or "job" in the textbox. The only case sensitive operator is the "OR" operator (see below).

  • The table below provides a list of operators you can use to narrow down the results of your search
(All of these options are available in more user-friendly format on the Advanced Search screen):
Operator Description Example
+ AND
(plus sign)

This is the default search option and will be used if you do not explicitly specify another option. Make sure you include a space in front if you decide to use it anyway

Search for documents containing the words financial and aid (same as if you type financial aid).

OR OR
(case sensitive)

Use this operator if you want to search for WordA or WordB. Must be typed in UPPERCASE with space in front of it.

Search for documents containing the word arts, or the word music, or both.

- NOT
(minus sign)

Use this operator if you want to exclude the word after it from your search. Your query must not start with it.

Search for documents containing the word courses and not containing the word computer.

" "Exact Phrase"
(double quotes)

Use this operator if you want to search for the exact phrase between the double quotes.

Search for documents containing the phrase Outlook Express.

* Wildcard (Match Variations)
(asterisk)

To use this operator you type the part of the word you are searching for, and then the asterisk.

Search for documents containing words starting with phys (physician, physics, physical, etc).

[-]filetype: File Type
the minus sign (optional), the word filetype, followed by a colon

If you want to search for a certain file type(s) only (e.g. "html") you can use this operator. If you want to exclude certain file type(s) from your search you can use this operator with a "minus" sign in front of it. After the colon you must leave no space and separate the file extensions with commas (do not use quotes). It must be the last thing in your query.

Search for documents containing the word job, excluding Adobe Acrobat PDF files and Microsoft Word documents.

pagetitle: Search titles only
the word pagetitle, followed by a colon

If you want to search the titles of the webpages only you can use this operator. To use it you must put it in the beginning of your query.

Search only the titles of the webpages for the word nursing.
