a significant impact on Long island, which is already seeing resurgence in
manufacturing contracts. e skills training that will be covered by this proposal will
be critical to the continuance of regional manufacturing growth, since the training
will ensure that companies looking for employees will be able to find qualified
applicants through their partnerships with our community college.
Governance Changes.
During its 2011-2012 elections, the College’s Board of
Trustees elected Dafny irizarry as Chairwoman. e Board appointment term ended
for ernesto Mattace, Jr. who was replaced by Anne Shybunko-Moore. Patricia
McMahon resigned her term due to new work responsibilities and the remainder of
her appointment will be fulfilled by James Morgo. Anthony Mangual was reelected by
the College’s student body for a second term as student trustee.
e foundation’s Board of Directors elected ed Boughal as Chairman and eric
Martinez as Treasurer. New members to the foundation Board are: Leslie Anderson,
Michael Grant, felice Jones-Lee, Dr. randolph Manning, Belinda Pagdanganan,
edwin roldan and ernesto Mattace, Jr.
Out of County Tuition Chargebacks.
Last year, the County shifted over
$10 million in college costs to each of the County’s 10 towns. ese costs pay for
students who reside in Suffolk County but attend a community college other than
Suffolk. in November, the Suffolk County Legislature approved a resolution to rescind
the gasoline tax cap in order to eliminate the need to charge Long island’s towns for
out-of-county tuition charges. e bill included a provision to sunset after 12 months
and Legislators indicated they planned to reach out to members of the State
Legislature to address the existing chargeback policy.
e College decided to survey Suffolk County residents attending out-of-County
community colleges. in the spring of 2012, we sent out 3,535 questionnaires and
received 324 surveys, which is a response rate of approximately 9%. respondents were
asked what the most important factor was in determining to attend a community
college other than Suffolk. e number one reason cited was that the academic major
they wanted was not available. e top three majors respondents wanted were fashion
merchandising/fashion, mortuary science, and radiological x-ray technology. e
out-of-County community college most commonly attended was Nassau Community
College, followed by fashion institute of Technology and Tompkins Cortland
Community College. we also wanted to find out if students had ever applied or
attended Suffolk County Community College. ere were 33% that answered yes.
of those, 63% attended. we asked these students to share with us their experience
when they attended Suffolk County Community College. we learned from the survey
results that once they got to know us, they liked us. we looked at the overall student
experience, including facilities, labs, athletic programs, and recreational activities.
e College secured overall ratings from survey participants of good to excellent.
Community Leadership.
At the Long island regional Advisory Council on
Higher education (LirACHe) annual Board of Trustees meeting, i was elected to
serve on the 2012-2013 LirACHe Steering Committee. Suffolk was also selected to
host LirACHe's upcoming annual fall dinner at the Culinary Arts and Hospitality
Center in riverhead. in addition, i was selected as a co-chair of the LirACHe
Superintendent-College President Partnership. is Partnership is an ongoing forum
that addresses matters affecting teaching and learning on Long island, in recognition
of the fact that K-12 and post-secondary institutions are systemically interdependent.
in December, the Urban League of Long island hosted their annual equal
opportunity Day. As part of this event, the Urban League recognizes individuals,
