Carissa­Scarfi­(Class­of­2011),­was­selected­by­(SUNY)­to­be­featured­as­a
part­of­their­postcard­campaign­to­the­New­York­State­Legislature­on­how
community­colleges­transform­lives.­rough­her­student­leadership­
experiences­on­campus,­she­found­her­calling­in­Professional­
Communications­and­transferred­to­SUNY­Farmingdale,­where­she­will
continue­her­studies­in­this­field.­
Patrick­Rueb­(Class­of­2003),­was­recently­selected­as­one­of­the­top­
50­Volkswagen­mechanics­in­the­nation.­Mr.­Rueb­was­the­only­
Volkswagen­mechanic­from­Long­Island­to­meet­the­criteria­for­
selection.­ere­are­more­than­4,500­Volkswagen­mechanics­nation-
wide.­He­is­a­graduate­of­the­College’s­Automotive­Technology­
Program.­e­Program­is­housed­in­a­20,000­square-foot­state-of-
the-art­facility,­equipped­with­the­latest­technology­including:­nine
fully­functional­shop­bays;­classrooms­with­the­latest­wireless­
technology­enabling­access­to­technical­data­for­all­makes­and­
models­of­automobiles;­Hunter­Computerized­Alignment­
Machines,­Hunter­Balancing­Equipment;­Mitchell­On-Demand­
in­all­classes­and­a­computerized­engine­analyzer­and­vehicle
dynomometer­that­conforms­with­current­New­York­State­
Inspection­requirements.­e­instruction,­course­of­study,­
facilities­and­equipment­in­the­program­were­evaluated­by­the
National­Automotive­Technicians­Education­Foundation
(NATEF)­and­were­found­to­meet­the­National­Institute­for
Automotive­Service­Excellence­(ASE)­standards­of­quality­for­the­training­
of­automobile­technicians­in­all­areas.­
e­College­was­recently­rated­among­the­nation's­fastest-growing­two-year­schools­
by­
Community College Week
.­Suffolk­was­ranked­number­42­out­of­the­nation's­top­
50­fastest­growing­community­colleges­with­enrollments­greater­than­10,000­students.
e­rating­was­based­on­a­review­of­the­enrollment­of­more­than­1,100­community
colleges­nationwide.­e­ranking­was­based­on­Suffolk’s­8%­increase­in­enrollment
from­the­fall­of­2009­to­the­fall­of­2010.­In­the­fall­of­2010,­the­College­reported­an
enrollment­of­26,719­students.­I­believe­our­enrollment­growth­is­reflective­of­our­
exceptional­programs,­highly­trained­and­dedicated­faculty­and­staff,­and­the­College’s
ability­to­provide­the­best­academic­experiences­for­all­who­attend.­
Suffolk­County­Community­College­Professor­of­Nursing,­Lisa­Quinones,­was­
recently­honored­for­her­global­efforts­to­educate­students,­health­advocates­and­
underserved­populations­in­Latin­America­with­an­Inspired­Comfort­Award­presented
by­Cherokee­Uniforms.­Professor­Quinones­was­one­of­only­seven­recipients­nation-
wide­who­receive­this­prestigious­award.­e­Inspired­Comfort­Award­is­granted­by
Cherokee­Uniforms­as­a­way­to­nationally­recognize­the­unique­skills,­characteristics
and­work­of­nurses­who­provide­exceptional­service,­sacrifice­and­innovation­while
positively­impacting­others’­lives.­An­advanced­nurse­practitioner,­Professor­Quinones
spends­vacations­crossing­borders­and­traveling­the­world­to­help­others­by­leading
medical­missions­to­areas­of­Honduras,­Panama­and­the­Dominican­Republic.­
For­her­efforts,­Professor­Quinones­also­received­Suffolk­County's­annual­“Woman­of
Distinction”­Award.­
Other­noteworthy­recognition­this­year­includes:­Adjunct­Professor­of­English­
Edward­Stever­was­named­Suffolk­County­Poet­Laureate.­­Dr.­Tina­Good,­Professor­
of­English­was­sworn­in­as­the­Faculty­Council­of­Community­College’s­representative
on­the­State­University­of­New­York­Board­of­Trustees.
