| Federal Grants (PELL, SEOG) and Loans
1. After filing the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the processor via e-mail. The SAR will be mailed to you in the event you do not have a valid e-mail address (i.e., in one week for electronic filing; four to six weeks for paper filing).
2. If your SAR is incorrect or additional information is needed, provide the necessary information, complete all certification sections, sign and submit corrected SAR to the Financial Aid Office on your home campus. Or, you can use your Department of Education pin number and make correction via the FAFSA Web site.
3. If your SAR is correct, no further action needed. If selected by the Federal processor to verify income information, you must submit appropriate income tax returns and download the appropriate Dependent or Independent Verification Worksheet.
4. The Financial Aid Office will send you an award letter (within 10-14 days) describing the programs and amounts for which you are eligible.
5. If you indicated an interest in a loan, your award letter will indicate if you received a subsidized or an unsubsidized loan. If you wish to cancel or adjust this loan amount, you must complete a Loan Adjustment Form. Go to Printable Form |
Federal Grants and Loans (Con't)
6. If you are a first-time borrower at SCCC and your award includes a loan, you must fulfill the federal requirement for an Entrance Interview. You can do this by going online to Mapping-Your-Future or in person at the campus Financial Aid Office.
7. If you were awarded a loan and are a first-time borrower at Suffolk County Community College, the NYS Higher Education Service Corporation (HESC) will send you instructions as to how to sign your electronic Master Promissory Note (e-MPN) and select a lender.
8. You must sign the e-MPN before HESC can approve your loan. You will need to sign your e-MPN via the web at HESC using your Federal Pin Number
9. HESC will then send you a loan disclosure notice which indicates your loan approval or denial as well as the type of loan and amount. Note: check your status by going to HESC.
10. Your loan funds will be disbursed to your college account to pay for your tuition and fees, with any remaining balance mailed to you early in the semester.
11. Note that federal grants and loans may be reduced for each course from which you withdraw. |
State Grants (TAP)
1. After filing the FAFSA, on the confirmation page, you will see a link to NYS Higher Education TAP Application. This application allows you to file for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program.
2. If you miss the link from the online FAFSA, abandon the Web session, or applied using the paper FAFSA, you will be able to apply online at NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) where you will be able to establish a HESC PIN to gain access to the online TAP application. You should complete the TAP application only if you are a full-time student (i.e., 12 or more credits). Make certain that Suffolk County Community College (#2157) is the college listed.
3. In approximately two weeks after filing your application, you will be able to check your TAP award on the HESC Web site.
