It's good to be 15 here. 16 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Welcome. 17 VICE PRESIDENT STIER: There's a 18 document in your material, 19 reconciliation page, that shows the 20 preliminary results for the 2008-2009 21 school year. Final results won't be 22 available until the next meeting, but 23 the preliminary results show the 24 following: 25 Revenues are projected to be 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 7 2 $1.1 million above budget. 3 Expenditures, $2.1 million below budget. 4 For a net surplus of $3.2 million. 5 We need some of those funds to 6 cover the structural deficit that the 7 county built in this budget, but the 8 bottom line is that we'll be able to add 9 $1.7 million to reserves even after 10 covering that amount from the -- of the 11 reserves. So that's a good result. 12 We thought we might do better, but 13 there were some year-end facilities 14 issues that had to be covered. The fire 15 alarm system at Kreiling Hall -- 16 Is that the right pronunciation? 17 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Kreiling. 18 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Kreiling. 19 VICE PRESIDENT STIER: Kreiling -- 20 sorry -- had to be fixed for $130,000, 21 and the rooftop chiller in the Riverhead 22 building cost $120,000 to replace, and 23 there were some temporary water problems 24 in other buildings. 25 But even with these year-end 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 8 2 crises, the budget was managed very well 3 during the year, and resulted in that 4 year-end surplus which was achieved. 5 As I said before, next month you'll 6 get a final report on the 2008-'9 7 finances. And at that point, we'll also 8 provide you our first report on the new 9 year, 2009-'10. 10 As you've heard, enrollment is up. 11 So that means that revenues will be up 12 as well. And, of course, we've add -- 13 with more students, there's some added 14 expenses for adjunct faculty and for 15 supplies. And I actually brought back 25 some buttons, because I know many of the 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 10 2 new Trustees don't have them yet, and 3 I'll pass them around quickly. 4 The institute was amazing. And the 5 Student Trustee was able to attend, 6 which really worked out nicely because 7 they had a specific session designed for 8 them to help them to appreciate exactly 9 what their role is on the Board of 10 Trustees. 11 And I also was nominated and also 12 approved to the Board of Directors for 13 NYCCT. 14 TRUSTEE PONTIERI: Congratulations. 15 TRUSTEE WARE: So that was a great 16 honor. 17 Thank you. 18 (Applause) 19 TRUSTEE WARE: That puts us in a 20 great position, because this way I can 21 be there and actually be a good voice on 22 behalf of Suffolk County Community 23 College in the discussions of what's 24 taking place. 25 And our attention was really 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 11 2 directed to this (indicating), which was 3 wonderful because I hadn't been 4 receiving them, and that's probably my 5 fault, maybe I should be requesting it, 6 whatever. But we all should have this 7 as Trustees, because this article -- 8 this particular issue addresses what 9 Joe Biden is doing on behalf of 10 community colleges, which is just 11 awesome. But it has a lot of other 12 great information for us, and I think 13 it's really relevant to trying to keep 14 up on what's happening just in the 15 stream of things. 16 SECRETARY KANE: Did everyone get 17 one of those magazines? 18 TRUSTEE WARE: I don't know, but we 19 should. 20 SECRETARY KANE: I did, and I -- 21 the interesting part about that, it 22 gives you about three pages on a 23 breakdown of contract for a new 24 president. 25 TRUSTEE WARE: Yeah, a lot of -- 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 12 2 SECRETARY KANE: It's excellent. 3 TRUSTEE WARE: You're right, it's 4 an amazing magazine. And 24 they gave such great -- the HIA, 25 Hauppauge Industrial Association, gave 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 15 2 great accolades to our college, to 3 Randy Manning, and to Vice President 4 James Whitten. 5 I just wanted to say that I was 6 just so proud to sit there at the table, 7 and just that we were -- we were honored 8 for this particular award, that we 9 received it. I had the 8 opportunity to spend the entire day with 9 the new Chancellor, and I have developed 10 a good feeling about the future of SUNY 11 and which way we're going. 12 She had the foresight to decide 13 that the first thing she was going to do 14 was visit every campus, and she did. 15 Which I think was a great first step to 16 understand the different needs of the 17 different campuses. 18 I understand she's going to be 19 holding some, basically, town hall 20 meetings, you know, across the state, 21 which again is important to find out 22 what's needed at different campuses. 23 So I look forward to a bright and 24 hopeful future, not only for us but for 25 the whole SUNY system. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 18 2 I attended All-College Day, and had 3 a chance -- when you get a chance, 4 please, everybody, take a look at this 5 video. Okay. It's our history. 6 I was a little surprised I guess at 7 some of the parts, but I remember most 8 of the individuals in that video over 9 the years. And I think everybody not 10 only appreciated our first 50 years, but 11 the way the history was put together and 12 presented. And I think it will be an 13 asset for us not only going forward, but 14 to make sure that we chroniclize (sic) 15 what exactly Suffolk is all about. 16 So for those who weren't able to 17 attend, I would strongly urge if you can 18 next year to attend All-College Day. 19 It's a wonderful day. 20 What we wind up doing is bringing 21 on board all the new employees and 22 thanking them for all their work, and 23 also thanking those individuals who 24 through the years have done so much for 25 this college and for the students. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 19 2 At the last meeting, number one, we 3 had a copy distributed of the dates for 4 our meetings. If there's any problems, 5 please let me know because it's still 6 early in the year. But I would ask you 7 all to look at your calendars and so 8 accordingly schedule the availability 9 for everybody to attend every meeting. 10 We also had committees that we've 11 talked about. I'd like to make some 12 adjustments on that, but I'd like to 13 discuss that hopefully at the board 14 retreat so we can have some input back 15 and forth for the Trustees who might 16 have an interest in a specific 17 committee. But we will try to and 18 will -- all right -- use the committee 19 structure to our advantage and to the 20 college advantage and to cut down 21 literally on our time here -- all 22 right -- because that committee will 23 come back to the board and express 24 whatever has to be researched so we can 25 get it done. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 20 2 Everybody's time is valuable. I 3 appreciate everybody who does attend the 4 meetings and who does do work for the 5 college, but, again, you know, we all 6 have -- all have lives out there, and we 7 all have families. And there'll be a 8 lot of work that we're going to be 9 having to do over the next year that has 10 to be accomplished, including picking a 11 new president, and it should be 12 interesting to say the least. 13 So, again, I thank you. 14 TRUSTEE WARE: Can I take a quick 15 second, because I just got handed this 16 envelope; I was waiting on it, actually. 17 Again, I'm just going to pass these 18 around (handing). 19 For the Suffolk Center on 20 Holocaust, Diversity and Human 21 Understanding, I do serve on that board, 22 and we're now preparing for semiyearly 23 or annual embracing our differences. So 24 they're always looking for submissions 25 from artists and those who want to be 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 21 2 artists and those who think they're 3 artists and -- 4 (Laughter) 5 TRUSTEE WARE: But, no, it's 6 really -- it's really great. 7 They're going to have an actual 8 opening celebration, which will be held 9 on October the 8th. And so it is an 10 invitation for any who are able to 11 attend. I can get additional details to 12 you, but as of now, it's going to be 13 held on the grounds of the Long Island 14 Museum in Stony Brook, and it will begin 15 at about 4:00 p.m. There will be 16 refreshments, and anything else that you 17 have further, I can get additional 18 information, as I said. But this is 19 something that -- maybe pays to look at 20 because it's always a great event. 21 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Maybe it's time 22 for the group to come before the board 23 and bring us an update of what's 24 happening -- 25 TRUSTEE WARE: Okay. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 22 2 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: -- with all 3 their programs. 4 TRUSTEE WARE: Okay. 5 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: I think it would 6 be good for us as far as being informed 7 on what's happening and helping expand 8 the project. 9 TRUSTEE WARE: You got it. 10 Steve just mentioned that to me 11 yesterday when I asked him to provide 12 some more updated information, and he 13 did say that. 14 He said, You know, I'd love to -- 15 I've been trying. 16 I said, Well, then you have to make 17 it happen. 18 So I'll let him know. 19 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: He's going to 20 make it happen -- 21 TRUSTEE WARE: Okay. 22 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: -- I spoke to 23 him about it the other day. 24 TRUSTEE WARE: Oh, good. Okay. 25 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: So I'm going to 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 23 2 move forward. 3 And just to let everybody know, we 4 are going to be going to San Francisco 5 for the national conference; myself, 6 Walter, Belinda, and Avette. And in the 7 future, especially with the New York 8 State conferences, if you can make them, 9 it's -- it's a learning experience and 10 to understand what's happening. 11 The national conferences last year, 12 we wound up in New York City, which was 13 interesting, because we didn't realize 14 that everybody was going to book a year 15 in advance. 16 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Yeah. 17 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: So we got in the 18 car at 6 o'clock in the morning, drove 19 in, and came back out again. 20 But what's interesting is, across 21 the country on how different boards -- I 22 mean, in Texas, they run for office. 23 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Uh-huh. 24 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: You know what I 25 mean? It's in a regular election, they 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 24 2 have to go out and talk to their 3 constituents, and it's different all 4 across the country. And it's amazing, 5 all the problems are basically the same. 6 Okay. It's how you get here. Which 7 was -- was interesting to me, and 8 talking to different individuals, again, 9 from all across the country on what 10 their goals are. So -- 11 All right. 12 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: Let me say 13 one thing, too, there. 14 I would ask that the board 15 recognize the contribution that 16 John Foley made to this board, and to 17 express our regrets to his family on his 18 passing. He will be sorely, sorely 19 missed. 20 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Yes, he will be. 21 George. 22 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: I have a 23 number of updates, but before I do that, 24 why don't we have the -- we have two 25 presentations. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 25 2 The first is on our Banner Finance 3 Transition, and Associate Dean Gary Ris 4 will give that presentation -- give that 5 update. 6 DEAN RIS: Good morning. 7 I can report that our finance 8 system is live and working. We hit our 9 September 1st deadline, and really 10 thanks to the major efforts by the 11 finance team. I think John Bullard can 12 attest to some very, very late nights. 13 But the system is up and running, and 14 it's working well. 15 We have a handful of items that we 16 still have to accomplish, mostly cleanup 17 and a couple of ancillary tasks 18 versus -- we have to work on the PBS 19 feed from the county to import that into 20 our system. But for all in all, we're 21 doing well with finance. 22 I was also asked to talk briefly 23 about HR. HR's got a critical month 24 coming up at this point. We have our 25 first full test of payroll happening in 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 26 2 October. Basically what we have to do 3 is we have to get a lot of data into the 4 system this month, and this team is 5 going to be working very hard this 6 month. 7 We are receiving some good 8 cooperation from the county. We had a 9 meeting last Friday with the county -- 10 actually, it was last Monday, excuse me, 11 with the county to go over what's in 12 their system and how we can get that out 13 as far as feeding information to 14 deduction vendors. But all in all, 15 they're progressing well also. 16 Again, it's going to be a critical 17 month, but I think in the long run we 18 are making very good progress with 19 payroll. We do have an aggressive 20 schedule to lay out, but we should be on 21 time with that. Obviously, that's an 22 important date, January 1, for being 23 live with payroll for us. 24 So that's essentially where we are 25 now. Again, the teams are working very 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 27 2 hard. We're making great -- great work, 3 and we should continue in that area. 4 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Thank 5 you, Gary. 6 Let me just underscore the point 7 Gary made, and he made it several times, 8 but the group of individuals from both 9 the -- from the Central Business office, 10 from the Human Resources office, the 11 Payroll office, and the support staff 12 from our data center, our Computer IT 13 staff, it's -- it's -- I -- I can't 14 overemphasize how much they've put into 15 this project and how much above and 16 beyond the -- the normal workweek 17 they've gone in helping us to implement 18 this. So they deserve our thanks, and 19 we're going to be much -- you know, 20 we'll be very well served in the end 21 when we have these systems in place and 22 they're functioning as finances now, and 23 as the student system has for the past 24 year, and we continue to make 25 improvements on that. But the staff has 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 28 2 done an absolutely great job in helping 3 us move to where we are today. 4 And the second -- the second 5 presentation is on our Web site 6 redesign, and also a couple of 7 publications that you have in front of 8 you today. And that's Vice President 9 Araneo and Drew Fawcett. 10 DEAN FAWCETT: Good morning. 11 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Good morning. 12 DEAN FAWCETT: Hi, I'm Drew 13 Fawcett. I'm the Associate Dean for 14 Institutional Advancement. I'm just 15 going to give a very quick presentation 16 about our new Web site. I understand 17 there's a new dynamic in the -- the 18 setup of the room, so it's not 19 necessarily conducive to viewing the 20 screen, but we'll give it a go. 21 Okay. I'm going to start off with 22 the assumption that everybody in the 23 room has been to our current Web site. 24 Our Web site has served us well. The 25 Web site was initiated in the early 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 29 2 1990s. At that time, it was sort of an 3 amalgam that was -- that was put 4 together by various departments. And as 5 I said, although it served us well, it 6 is time for the Web site to be updated 7 and enhanced so that it's more 8 compatible with the needs of -- of the 9 constituencies that we serve today. 10 Another thing I just wanted to 11 bring your attention to, some of you may 12 or may not know that the -- the college 13 has invested in a RedDot Content 14 Management Software System. That took 15 place a couple of years ago. And 16 essentially that software system is 17 allowing the different departments the 18 autonomy to update their areas of the 19 Web site. 20 That's important for a couple of 21 reasons. Not the least of which, 22 departments know their constituencies 23 best, and by allowing the different 24 departments to update their sites, it 25 allows us to bring information to our 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 30 2 public much more quickly and 3 efficiently. 4 This is just a -- a quick time 5 graph of the inception of the Suffolk 6 County College Web site in the early 7 '90s, essentially late '80s through now 8 (indicating). 9 The first question that the working 10 group wanted to ask itself -- and the 11 working group, I'd like to share, is 12 another reflection of different areas of 13 the college, including the institutional 14 advancement, IT, institutional 15 effectiveness. 16 The question was, Well, what is 17 www.sunysuffolk.edu? And simply put, 18 it's the public face of the institution. 19 It's an opportunity for the college to 20 engage in student recruitment, 21 marketing, community relations, 22 workforce development and partnership 23 issues, and alumni development. 24 Conversely, the Internet, which is 25 our faculty and student portal, is 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 31 2 really best used for internal 3 communications and as a one-stop 4 location for faculty, students, and 5 staff information. 6 I mentioned just a few minutes ago 7 that the college invested in RedDot 8 Content Management Software System, 9 which has been a good thing. But what 10 we needed to be mindful of in designing 11 the new Web site, we needed to make sure 12 that the architecture was going to be 13 compatible with our RedDot Content 14 Management Software System. 15 As I mentioned, a working group was 16 formed. It included various areas of 17 the college. It was lead by Vice 18 President Araneo and myself, Dean Gary 19 Ris, Dean Lou Alconozi (phonetic). 20 And as I said, we asked ourselves, 21 Well, what are we trying to do? 22 And the answer, after not much time 23 actually, was, Well, we have to 24 understand how different audiences 25 understand how we should best serve 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 32 2 them. 3 So we developed an inclusive 4 process for qualitative and quantitative 5 feedback. This process included 6 internal and external audiences with 7 listening sessions, surveys, focus 8 groups. It included faculty staff, 9 administration, our current students, 10 alumni, guidance counselors from various 11 high schools across our service 12 territory, and parents. 13 As I mentioned, it included 14 informal listening sessions. We 15 actually had full surveys, we had focus 16 groups. We actually even had a very 17 large feedback session during the past 18 All-College Day. And it included 19 reviews of all the SUNY college sites, 20 as well as more than 120 other community 21 college -- college and university sites 22 from across the country. 23 The interviews that I mentioned 24 just a few minutes ago from an internal 25 perspective included representatives 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 33 2 from the Athletics Department, Theater, 3 Campus Activities, the Honors 4 Department; virtually every part of the 5 college. The upshot really that I'd 6 like you to walk away with is that this 7 was a highly, highly inclusive process. 8 I mentioned that we also had focus 9 groups with guidance counselors, and 10 they included school districts from the 11 110 Corridor all the way out to the East 12 End of Long Island. 13 As we start to analyze the 14 information that we received from all 15 these constituencies, the shape of the 16 new site began to evolve. We wanted to 17 be extremely mindful of the research 18 that we had done in reviewing the 19 Web sites that are currently out there 20 from -- again, from community college 21 high schools to large universities. 22 And, just one again, we needed to be 23 extremely mindful of being compatible 24 with our RedDot system. 25 What I'm going to show you right 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 34 2 now is the new homepage design, and also 3 a few subordinate sub pages, if you 4 will, for the site. 5 Are you ready? 6 This is the new college Web site 7 (indicating). I'd like to draw your 8 attention to a few different areas. 9 First and foremost, you'll see a 10 very large visual element. I'd like you 11 to know that that is actually active 12 content. So, in reality, that image 13 of what you're seeing right now, it's 14 Veterans Plaza with the new 50th 15 anniversary banners, that image will 16 actually be moving. So we have much 17 more energy on our Web site. 18 The image also will be directly 19 tied to promotional opportunities that 20 are within that box. 21 So, for instance, you see on the 22 right side of that large banner, 23 Suffolk County Community College 50th 24 Anniversary, and there's an adjoining 25 photo that makes sense with that copy. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 35 2 Now, if people wanted to find out, 3 for instance, what's going on for our 4 50th Anniversary, they would simply 5 click on either the navigational bar on 6 the right that's highlighted that you 7 see that sort of looks like an arrow, or 8 they could click directly through the 9 visual and they would be brought to a 10 relevant content area. 11 This image area allows us to 12 promote four to six different topics or 13 issues that are important to the 14 college. We can update things very, 15 very quickly so we always have relevant 16 topical information. 17 I'd also like to bring your 18 attention to right above that large 19 image area. There is a top chair 20 navigation bar which includes Home, 21 About Suffolk County Community College, 22 Academics, Continuing Education, and 23 Admissions. Those are all portholes 24 from which our various constituencies 25 can get information readily. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 36 2 The main navigation bar is actually 3 right in the middle of the page. And 4 that includes Alumni, Business and 5 Workforce Development, Perspective 6 Students, Current Students, Community 7 Programs and Resources, and Faculty and 8 Staff. 9 The two main areas that our 10 constituencies will mostly use will be 11 Prospective Students and Current 12 Students. As a result, those are 13 centered directly in the page. 14 I'll share with you just an 15 anecdote that when we were building 16 this, my intuition was to put those two 17 navigation bars -- reading the left to 18 right on that navigation -- low 19 navigation strip. However, the research 20 indicated that most people when 21 reviewing a web page, their eyes 22 gravitate to the center of the page. As 23 a result, those two main abilities are 24 directly in the middle of our homepage. 25 Right below that on the left side 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 37 2 you'll see that we have a new 3 architecture so that we can get out 4 information that -- very quickly and 5 efficiently. It includes tabs from 6 which people can click for recent news, 7 you'll see an example of that. Directly 8 to the right of that we have a tab for 9 events, we also have a tab for 10 announcements. There's a great 11 opportunity and a great location where 12 we can publicize information regarding, 13 for instance, Board of Trustee meetings. 14 On the lower right-hand side you'll 15 see three horizontal opportunities for, 16 again, sort of sub promotion. These are 17 right now what we would consider FPOs, 18 for position only. This is a static 19 page meant to show you what the Web site 20 will look like. When the Web site is 21 actually launched, these will deal with 22 various topics, again, not unlike the 23 large navigation -- large visual element 24 on the top of the page. But I do want 25 to say that they are built so that they 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 38 2 can either hold a full visual, hold 3 full-narrative copy, as you'll see at 4 the second one down underneath, the one 5 where he's looking out the window, or 6 hold narrative copy and a visual. 7 Because of the constraints of the 8 screen that you're looking at, you 9 actually are not looking at what our 10 homepage looks like in totality. But 11 what you are seeing is what we would 12 consider the above-the-fold news. 13 This is actually how the page would 14 look to the viewer (indicating). 15 Depending upon the person's browser, and 16 browsers will differ from, you know, AOL 17 to Yahoo to whatever you're using, most 18 people would see the information that I 19 just showed you, the above-the-fold 20 information, other browsers would allow 21 people to see the full image area. 22 And I just want to go through a 23 couple of things on the bottom of that. 24 We also have, as you could see on the 25 bottom left-hand corner -- I know it's 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 39 2 difficult to read on the screen -- we 3 have direct contact information, because 4 although we are an e-nation by now, 5 people still do feel comfort and often 6 choose to call somebody. So we want to 7 have direct access to both -- to all our 8 campus locations, as well as our 9 Admissions phone number, and information 10 for the Culinary Arts & Hospitality 11 Center on Main Street in Riverhead. 12 We also have another porthole, if 13 you will, other ways to get to heavily 14 traveled locations on our Web site. 15 Including Admissions, Registrar, 16 Financial Aid, Student Life, Account or 17 Events, Map and Directions, Library, and 18 then a full site map, that's right on 19 the bottom, on the lower part of the -- 20 of the page. And then the right -- 21 right lower -- lower right-hand side we 22 have our mission and our logo. 23 I wanted to give you just a quick 24 glimpse, up on the top right-hand side, 25 we also maintained a quick links bar. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 40 2 That quick links bar, when it's 3 navigated over, it will pop up, and 4 you'll be able to see everything that 5 you can get to very quickly and 6 efficiently. At this page you'll 7 see -- if someone is -- with their mouse 8 or their touch pad is rolling over the 9 quick links and wanted to go to contacts 10 and directions, that area is 11 highlighted. 12 I also wanted to show you what the 13 main navigations bar would look like 14 when someone, again, is -- is cruising 15 through out Web site with either their 16 touch pad or their -- their scroll 17 mouse. In this case perspective 18 students would be highlighted. 19 This is an example of what -- what 20 somebody would see when they click 21 through their perspective -- perspective 22 students navigation bar. Again, this is 23 all what's considered FPO, for position 24 only. The copy is -- is not real a copy 25 at this point, it's really just to show 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 41 2 you the concept and what this page will 3 look like. 4 What's important to -- to walk away 5 with, though, is that this page is 6 actually designed in RedDot 7 compatibility. And that's important, 8 because if you've been to our Web site, 9 our Web site is very robust. However, 10 because it's been designed part in 11 parcel over the last 20 years, it lacks 12 a certain continuity. Not only 13 aesthetic but total continuity. 14 RedDot allows -- whether it's the 15 Philosophy Department or the Continuing 16 Education Department or the Athletics 17 Departments, it allows a continuity of 18 aesthetic design so that everybody sees 19 we're all part of the same family. 20 Again, this is designed in RedDot. 21 This is a sub page. This is what 22 somebody may see if they click through 23 to the current students (indicating). 24 The President's Message 25 (indicating). 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 42 2 And this is an example of deep 3 content (indicating). This is actually 4 two or three pages down featuring 5 Liberty Partnerships. Again, designed 6 with RedDot compatibility. 7 Our next steps, we need to review 8 the existing site map which is quite 9 large, and develop a content plan for 10 this new environment. We're developing 11 templates, navigation structure, and 12 programming for all the active contents. 13 We want to publish existing 14 information in the new -- in the new 15 site. 16 And as Dean Ris was just talking to 17 you about, there's a lot going on in IT. 18 However, IT is working with this so that 19 we can publish the new site at our 20 earliest convenience. 21 I did also want to say that the 22 colors that you are seeing on the 23 screen, they're actually much more 24 vibrant and robust on the computer 25 terminal, because it loses something in 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 43 2 the projection on a large screen like 3 this. 4 I'm open to any questions. 5 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Good 6 job. 7 TRUSTEE WARE: Thank you. 8 (Applause) 9 DEAN FAWCETT: I was also asked, to 10 stay with the theme of communications, 11 just to mention a new initiative for the 12 college. 13 I believe that you have a copy of 14 Career Focus in each of your packets. 15 This is a new publication for the 16 college. It's a magazine -- consumer 17 magazine-style publication (indicating). 18 It was developed over the past -- since 19 around June through August, and this 20 publication has just started to be 21 mailed to upwards of 90,000 households 22 in Suffolk County. 23 We've also printed an additional 24 10,000 for direct distribution to high 25 school guidance departments, all the 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 44 2 libraries in Suffolk County, the 3 one-stop center, various events that 4 we will utilize them for, including 5 things -- internal events like 6 All-Collage Day. We have a big event in 7 October where we'll have career-oriented 8 students, about 1,000 or so, coming to 9 this campus, and they'll all walk home 10 with this magazine underneath their arm. 11 As the title indicates, Career 12 Focus predominantly focuses on 13 career-oriented opportunities for 14 students. And those students are 15 whether they're ages 18 or whether 16 they're age 88. 17 It's not exclusive to 18 career-oriented opportunities, and if 19 you have time and thumb through the -- 20 the magazine, you'll see we have 21 articles about how to best navigate the 22 financial aid process; we have articles 23 about our transferability and how many 24 of our students are transferring to some 25 of the best schools in the county. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 45 2 We're really excited about this 3 publication because it is a direct 4 mailed publication. It's an opportunity 5 to feature our career-oriented programs 6 in one shot. 7 Also, it's a little different than 8 our brochures. While our brochures are 9 very, very strong, this, in my opinion, 10 allows us to gather information through 11 our public in an under-the-radar way. 12 This is a very consumer-friendly 13 magazine-style publication. What it 14 does is it positions the college as a 15 central point of authority regarding 16 educational information and issues in 17 our region. 18 I encourage you to take a look at 19 it and read it. It allows us, as I 20 said, to get across information about 21 four or five or six different programs 22 at once. Hopefully, without becoming 23 overbearing. 24 And the -- the good news so far is 25 that this -- this just started the mail 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 46 2 on Saturday. On Monday I got a call 3 from the Director of Admissions at this 4 campus who said that she had received 5 three calls by Monday alone, 6 specifically about our new manufacturing 7 technology program. They had said that 8 they received the magazine at their home 9 and they read it and they wanted to 10 learn more about this program and how 11 they could enter the class. 12 Tuesday was All-College Day, and so 13 that was -- that was a long day for most 14 of us. But by the time I got back to my 15 office at about 5 o'clock, I -- the next 16 morning I received an e-mail from 17 Deborah Wilson who is in charge of the 18 Excelsior Program, and she had said that 19 she had gotten back to her office after 20 All-Collage Day and there were five 21 phone messages from parents who had said 22 that they had just received a -- a 23 magazine at their home that talked about 24 programs in which their high school 25 students can start taking college 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 47 2 credits through Suffolk County Community 3 College, and how can we make that happen 4 for them. 5 So, you know, that's a very good 6 harbinger. As I said, it just started 7 to get mailed to over 90,000 households. 8 We will keep you apprised, and -- and, 9 again, I encourage you to read it. So 10 if you have any -- if you have any 11 questions about this, I -- 12 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Are you 13 mailing this to community agencies? 14 DEAN FAWCETT: Excuse me? 15 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Are you 16 mailing this as well to community-based 17 agencies? 18 DEAN FAWCETT: Do you know what? 19 I -- I didn't think of that, but I think 20 that's a great idea. 21 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Okay. 22 Well, we have a list -- 23 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: We -- 24 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: -- we 25 also have a list here as well because of 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 48 2 the -- 3 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Yeah. 4 We're -- we wanted to have the -- 5 the postal patrons -- you know, have 6 everyone received it, but in addition to 7 that, we're planning on putting it in 8 the libraries. 9 We know that our elected officials, 10 particularly when their constituents -- 11 visiting their office, we have made 12 copies available to all of them, both on 13 the local and state level, and community 14 agencies as well. 15 This is -- it's -- it's a great 16 medium. 17 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: (Indicating) 18 DEAN FAWCETT: Mr. Chairman. 19 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: What's the 20 distribution schedule; will it be every 21 semester, or are you doing it -- do you 22 have any idea? 23 DEAN FAWCETT: Well, so far -- 24 again, it's only been a few days, but 25 the news has been positive. So we're 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 49 2 looking at this almost as a pilot test 3 study. 4 As you know, we have over 500,000 5 households in our county. So we're 6 trying to gather the information to find 7 out how effective this is. Intuitively, 8 I think it's going to be very good for 9 the college. And if so, I think -- I 10 think the college would agree that we 11 would do this on a regular basis. 12 Just a quick point about cost, to 13 give you an idea of what the investment 14 is on this, which is -- it's really 15 remarkable. 16 To mail out a six-by-nine postcard 17 first class is about 23 cents. Now, we 18 often don't mail first class, we'll mail 19 through bulk rate. However, just keep 20 that in mind as a barometer. 21 In putting together this 22 initiative, we have a 20-page, 23 four-color, oversized -- tabloid size 24 publication. Twenty pages. 25 We also have worked with Consortium 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 50 2 to design it, like a team of designers 3 based on the art direction that we 4 provide them. As you can see, we shot a 5 lot of the photography live for this 6 stuff. These are actually our students 7 right on the cover. 8 It is printed, we printed 100,000 9 of these -- okay -- then it is 10 distributed to, as I said, 90,000-plus 11 households, plus 10,000 for us for 12 various events and medians. And we also 13 have an active online version right on 14 our homepage. 15 Okay. All that totaled is about 16 40 cents a copy. 17 So it's a very good investment for 18 the college, and I think the return will 19 be there, again, given the -- the last 20 72 hours from what we've heard so far. 21 And if the news continues to roll in as 22 positively as it has been, then this 23 will be a mainstay. 24 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Do you 25 have any extra copies with you today? 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 51 2 DEAN FAWCETT: I do. Whether 13 it's heating, ventilating, 14 air-conditioning, or refrigeration, or 15 manufacturing technology, or nursing, or 16 any of the others that we're able to 17 feature. It gives the public, you know, 18 a better understanding of how they can 19 progress and move into a new career. 20 So I think it's powerful. And I 21 think, you know, as we get the response, 22 it's something that we should -- that we 23 very much should continue. 24 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: I agree. 25 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Mary Lou, 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 53 2 do you have anything to add? 3 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: No, I -- I 4 think Drew did a wonderful job in 5 covering all the high points. I did 6 want to add one thing about the video, 7 and I appreciate the opportunity, 8 George. 9 I think it's really important to 10 note that the video was produced almost 11 exclusively internally. We had a lot of 12 support from faculty. We had a very 13 strong working committee that went to 14 the depth of going through our entire 15 archival history, everything that's kept 16 in our library, to pull the still 17 photographs, to look at all issues of 18 the compass, to go ahead and create 19 these interview opportunities with over 20 75 individuals who were either members 21 of the faculty, retirees, alumni, and to 22 feature those, as well as go into the 23 postproduction phase and to produce a 24 video of such high quality. Not only 25 will it make you proud to be Board of 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 54 2 Trustee members, but I think it will 3 made the entire community proud when 4 they view it. 5 We also have the opportunity, 6 through our connection with Professor 7 Allen Bernstien who is a member of the 8 committee, to have this featured on 9 Cablevision On Demand. So you will also 10 see at least segments, if not, the video 11 in it's entirety, broadcast on 12 television. So we're really excited 13 about that. 14 And also in your packet today was 15 another item that was distributed as 16 part of our All-College Day festivities. 17 It's some notable facts about the 18 college, some fun facts about the 19 college that really looks at our 20 history, and presented in a little bit 21 different light than what you might 22 consider to be the state approach. 23 So I hope you enjoy the booklet, 24 and we're looking forward to an entire 25 calendar of events during the course of 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 55 2 the year to celebrate the 50th. Great job on that. 12 TRUSTEE OCHOA: George. 13 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Yes. 14 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Mary Lou, just a 15 quick observation or maybe even a 16 question. 17 One of the nice things about this 18 moment is that, in many respects, the 19 institution is in a transition. And we 20 are looking forward to a retreat and -- 21 and the new leadership that Ernie is 22 providing in the interim process. It 23 gives us a chance to look at how we do 24 business. And then when you have new 25 board members, it's a new relearning 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 57 2 process. 3 I guess my question is this -- and 4 it doesn't need to be answered now, but 5 it's an idea that I've been tinkering 6 with, and you just provoked it in terms 7 of bringing it to mind. 8 This is -- I've only glanced at it 9 (indicating). It's remarkable. The 10 description that Ernie gave of the video 11 is absolutely terrific, and the -- the 12 implications of the -- of the Web site 13 are absolutely off the charts. So 14 that's -- that's my impression. 15 My question is, it would help us, I 16 think, as Trustees, if you could share 17 with us at some other time so that we 18 can try to be helpful, in terms of 19 policy and in terms of fundraising. 20 For example, if on the back of this 21 (indicating) -- this was printed by a 22 $20,000 gift from Computer Associates 23 from their advertising budget, would 24 that be okay in terms of the policy? Is 25 it a conflict of any kind? 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 58 2 Over here you have a -- a tag that 3 this is contributed not at public cost, 4 a $20,000 grant from Arrow Electronics; 5 one of our largest firms. 6 This -- this could have cost 7 $40,000, and you have a tag here that 8 says, "Compliments Printed As a Public 9 Service by Nature's Bounty"; the 10 nation's largest manufacturer of 11 vitamins just here in -- in Long Island. 12 And these are the kinds of things I 13 think Trustees can do, but we don't have 14 a clue about -- that -- we can be 15 helpful, but we're still going to need 16 some guidance along that line. 17 If we know in advance that these 18 are cost items and it's absolutely legal 19 and appropriate -- because some folks 20 now, as you'll -- as you can read in the 21 literature, the most current article of 22 the Chronicle of Higher Education, the 23 most significant in -- given by alumni 24 have -- have been, if it's indexed, to 25 a -- to a reason. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 59 2 So if you asked an alumnus, give a 3 $200 gift, and we can give that $200 to 4 a student to avoid and to sub-vent the 5 cost for lab fees, there's a connection 6 to the alum to -- to that specific cause 7 according to the survey that's in the 8 current Chronicle of Higher Ed. 9 That's what really provoked the 10 thought. 11 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: Right. 12 TRUSTEE OCHOA: You might want to 13 give some thought to, is it appropriate 14 that -- what we want to do? Can we be 15 helpful? 16 As I look around the table with a 17 new colleague on the board, we sort of 18 need to know how can we be helpful, what 19 kind of expectations do you have, what 20 doors can we open. 21 And now we're learning that a lot 22 of individuals and a lot of corporations 23 are not anxious to write checks. But if 24 you know -- but if they know that they 25 can sub-vent from their advertising 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 60 2 budget of a million for your $40,000 3 request, that's a win-win for them. And 4 more and more corporations nationwide 5 are -- are doing that. 6 From you, we're going to need the 7 guidance about this information in 8 advance so it's useful. But I do know 9 that a lot of corporations, especially, 10 are very grateful to say, "Courtesy of 11 Computer Associates," and they avoided 12 sending you a check, it's in-house, they 13 use their printer -- 14 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: Right. 15 TRUSTEE OCHOA: -- the best rates 16 possible. 17 And it's just a suggestion as we 18 look at the agenda for the retreat as an 19 idea about what can Trustee do, 20 especially in the area of development. 21 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: Right. I 22 would welcome the opportunity to enter 23 into a dialogue both with the Board of 24 Trustees, and I think in some 25 consultation with the Foundation Board, 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 61 2 to have that conversation -- 3 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Okay. 4 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: -- once I 5 had the chance to examine, you know, are 6 there any restrictions -- 7 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Right. 8 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: -- on said 9 activities. 10 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Thank you. 11 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: But I 12 appreciate that, it's a wonderful idea. 13 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Not only 14 that, we all sit together, David and 15 myself, on the (inaudible) -- 16 VICE PRESIDENT ARANEO: It's a 17 wonderful idea. 18 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: David, your 19 point is well taken. To be honest, I 20 had to do some fundraising outside the 21 college, and some of our major 22 corporations that we deal with just 23 didn't have the money -- 24 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Right. 25 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: -- to donate. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 62 2 But I did approach them with the idea 3 of, Okay, how'd you like to do it out of 4 advertising? 5 TRUSTEE OCHOA: A bargain. That's 6 what I'm saying. 7 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: And that's what 8 they did. 9 TRUSTEE OCHOA: Exactly. 10 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Okay. And they 11 had it in budget -- all right -- and 12 they weren't overextending themselves, 13 and they got their name out there. So 14 it works. It does work. 15 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Good 16 point. 17 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: I just 18 have a couple of other items. 19 Within your packet is a copy of the 20 State of the College Address that was -- 21 that I delivered on Tuesday. If you 22 have any questions about it, it has 23 information on where we are, where we're 24 going, current challenges. And there's 25 a large section on accomplishes 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 63 2 throughout the 2008-2009 academic year. 3 To David's point of -- about 4 connecting with alumni and other 5 potential donors, one of the bullets 6 you'll see is the completion of our 7 online alumni community over the past 8 year through the office of Institutional 9 Advancement and the direction of Vice 10 President Araneo. So that's just 11 another tool that enables us to 12 communicate more effectively and 13 electronically, virtually without cost, 14 with our hundred-thousand-plus alumni. 15 So if you have questions about 16 anything in the State of the College 17 Address and you want to give me a call, 18 I'll be able to discuss it with you, you 19 know, at your convenience. 20 Just another aspect of the 21 Chancellor's visit. Her statewide tour 22 and her visit to all 64 campuses as part 23 of her information gathering as part of 24 development of a strategic plan, a new 25 strategic plan for the State University 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 64 2 system, and we're very happy to be part 3 of that and to showcase what this 4 college has to offer. We did it at 5 three different events, each featuring a 6 different aspect of the college. The 7 Chancellor was extremely impressed with 8 what she saw. 9 We've had a number of 10 communications back from her staff on 11 the day and how well it was planned, and 12 I thank the staff for all the work that 13 they put in to that, but this is just 14 the beginning of her strategic planning 15 process. There have been some public 16 announcements, and yesterday I was 17 informed by Dr. Tina Good that she's 18 been asked to serve on the Advisory 19 Committee as part of the strategic 20 planning process. So we're -- we're 21 happy to have one of our faculty members 22 serving in such a lead role within that 23 process. 24 Also, when we were at the Ammerman 25 Campus, as a second component of the 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 65 2 Chancellor's Award, and she presented 3 personally the Chancellor's Award to ten 4 faculty members, we had a chance to tour 5 the campus in Veterans Plaza, and we 6 included some faculty members in that 7 tour. And of note, there was a good 8 conversation between Professor Tom 9 Coleman and the Chancellor about her 10 desire to move forward and to enhance 11 services to veterans, and she asked him 12 if he would be willing to serve on a 13 statewide task force to help bolster 14 veterans services through the SUNY 15 system. 16 Another sidenote and a -- and a 17 bullet that you'll see within the 18 All-Collage Day address is that our 19 enrollment of veterans increased 20 30 percent from last year to this year. 21 So we're working very hard to make this 22 place as convenient and accessible and 23 helpful as we can to veterans. So our 24 efforts will dovetail well with what 25 will happen at the state level. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 66 2 There is a communication from 3 Middle States in your packet. They have 4 agreed to reschedule the visit. It 5 looks like the dates are going to be 6 January 7th and 8th. We have a board 7 meeting on the 7th, so we'll already be 8 assembled. They'll have a chance to 9 meet with the board and other 10 constituencies throughout -- throughout 11 the day on the 7th, and then deliver 12 their exit report on the 8th. 13 They will require an additional 14 monitoring update report on 15 December 1st, and we will provide that, 16 but we think we're in very good shape to 17 address all the issues that they've 18 raised in the prior monitoring visits. 19 Belinda had mentioned the 20 Innovative Educational Institution Award 21 from HIA, I just wanted to publically 22 thank Vice President Whitten, Corporate 23 Training Director John Lombardo, and 24 Associate Dean Randy Manning for their 25 work. They've maintained a very close 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 67 2 working relationship with the HIA, and 3 the relationships that we've developed 4 with many of the manufacturing 5 businesses that are a part of the HIA 6 are really moving us to a new level in 7 manufacturing technology both on the -- 8 now in the credit side as well as on the 9 corporate training side. 10 The new facility, as you know with 11 the ribbon cutting, was on the 2nd. 12 Many of you were there, it was part of 13 the Chancellor's visit. Extremely well 14 attended; over 150 business leaders, 15 many, many state, local, and county 16 elected officials, including our county 17 executive, Trustees, students, faculty. 18 A great event. 19 And just Tuesday we heard that 20 we -- that our Continuing Education 21 division had secured a new $180,000 22 grant through the State Department of 23 Labor to train 150 low-income residents 24 in renewable technologies, and that will 25 be over the next -- the next year and a 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 68 2 half. All of that training will be able 3 to take place at the new facility. 4 And we've also entered into an 5 agreement with United Way of Long Island 6 for a youth build, where they'll be 7 sending low-income youth, ages 18 to 24, 8 to the college for a similar type 9 training. So that facility is providing 10 a number of opportunities that we never 11 envisioned, and we're aggressively 12 pursuing those activities. 13 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: You 14 should all go over and see the building, 15 it is absolutely gorgeous. 16 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: One of the 17 comments of the keynote speaker the 18 other day was the availability of 19 federal funds. 20 Do you want to expand on that, that 21 we would be eligible for? 22 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Well, we 23 hear that the bill is -- will be voted 24 on, I believe he said, either this week 25 or early next week in congress. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 69 2 $12 billion over ten years. They will 3 be competitively disbursed. You know, 4 the points I made, and you'll see them 5 in the State of the College Address, 6 were well positioned in a number of 7 areas. They're focusing on both 8 workforce training, and we've made great 9 erodes in those linkages -- in those 10 partnerships with businesses. So we 11 have strong feedback that our training 12 is linked with industry needs. That 13 will position us well to access that 14 component of it. 15 There are two other components. 16 One, they want to enhance access 17 through online education. We're the 18 second -- second largest provider of 19 online education within the SUNY system. 20 So we are a leader in online education. 21 And the third is, and very 22 importantly, they want to improve 23 graduation rates. So retention and 24 support services for students will be 25 important. And at All-College Day we 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 70 2 touched on a number of initiatives. The 3 self-studies that have recently been 4 completed in the Foundation of 5 Excellence Program; the Adult Learner 6 Program self-study; and also the new 7 collaboration between faculty and 8 administration on the new Title III 9 initiative to help further strengthen 10 the institution. 11 So all those things are coming 12 together at the right time. I believe 13 we've got the building blocks in place. 14 We certainly have the teamwork in place 15 to very successfully compete for the 16 money once it's available on a 17 competitive basis. 18 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: George, on the 19 campuses, is there offices -- I'm sure 20 there are -- for veteran services as far 21 as the veterans coming in to be helped 22 with registration, and under the new 23 legislation, to get the funding we need 24 to then build it? 25 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: What we 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 71 2 have is we've -- we've done some 3 cross-training of our admission staff, 4 financial aid staff, counseling staff, 5 so that they are very well versed in the 6 issues related to veterans. 7 Is there a specific office on each 8 campus? No. It's an office within an 9 office, so to speak, within -- but as we 10 move forward, that's something that we 11 can look at and hopefully specialize in. 12 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: So they'd be 13 directed, if they came onboard, to spend 14 time with veterans -- 15 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: 16 Absolutely. 17 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: -- the 18 individual who has been cross-trained 19 will be able help them. 20 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Exactly. 21 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Okay. 22 Excellent. 23 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: That 24 concludes my report. 25 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Okay. 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 72 2 Anybody else? 3 STUDENT TRUSTEE ONYINANYA: As you 4 all may know, the New York Community 5 College Trustee Convention was held last 6 weekend in Albany. I had the pleasure 7 of attending this convention, as well as 8 my fellow Trustee Avette. We're both 9 very proud to represent Suffolk County 10 Community College. 11 Some of you are most likely aware 12 of this, but Avette was actually 13 appointed on the NYCCT Board. So 14 congratulations to you again, Avette. 15 This year's NYCCT Convention 16 consisted of Trustees and SUNY Trustees 17 which represented seven -- seven out of 18 the ten higher education regions of 19 New York State. They were a series of 20 plenary sessions to moderate about 21 NYCCT. President Mary Adams and other 22 board members moderated each session, 23 which discussed the responsibilities of 24 a Trustee. They went over the State 25 Education Law and Community College 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 73 2 Regulations, the proper governance of an 3 effective board, how to prepare for 4 Middle States review and accreditation, 5 and last but not least, the processes 6 for the President was currently ongoing. 7 We all were given a binder which 8 encompasses all the things that I 9 previously mentioned in detail. So it's 10 a good -- excellent source for 11 reference. 12 On the first night we had the 13 pleasure of having the SUNY Chancellor 14 grace us with her presence. Dr. Zimpher 15 was the keynote speaker for the dinner 16 that we had, and she graced us with 17 words of wisdom and words of support. 18 And, also, she gave us incite to her 19 vision as a chancellor. She was 20 incredibly honest during this 21 convention, and she profusely 22 acknowledged the efforts of the faculty, 23 administration, the Trustees, Student 24 Trustees, and students. 25 It was actually at the dinner that 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 74 2 they presented me, as well as other 3 Student Trustees, with a Certificate of 4 Completion to Trusteeship -- 5 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: All right. 6 STUDENT TRUSTEE ONYINANYA: 7 -- suitable for framing. 8 (Laughter) 9 STUDENT TRUSTEE ONYINANYA: Thank 10 you. 11 I was expecting -- I was expecting 12 to receive the recognition, but I had no 13 idea, so it was really an honor to 14 receive this. 15 The Student Trustees who attended 16 were given the opportunity to have a 17 session with the former SUNY Trustee 18 Donald Boyd who served as a SUNY Student 19 Trustee, I believe. Donald gave us his 20 insight as to -- and advised us how to 21 become a successful student, as well as 22 a successful Student Trustee. 23 The Trustees, including myself, 24 formed an Ad Hoc Committee and developed 25 a resolution to support the appointment 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 75 2 of a student rep on the NYCCT Board. 3 The NYCCT president, Mary Adams, had one 4 of the student trustees prepare a 5 resolution before everyone, and she 6 humbly obliged on having the board take 7 a use consideration (inaudible) at a 8 future time. 9 Overall, my experience at this 10 convention was phenomenal. It gave me 11 the chance to meet with other student 12 trustees to exchange ideas, personal 13 experiences, goals and apprehensions. 14 It was a very supportive atmosphere, and 15 we're still keeping in touch currently. 16 I'm very grateful that I attended, and 17 now I know my confidence as Student 18 Trustee has increased greatly, and now I 19 can add to -- I know I can add to the 20 betterment of this board as well as the 21 college as a whole. 22 Thank you. 23 TRUSTEE ALVAREZ-GRONEMAN: Thank 24 you. 25 (Applause) 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 76 2 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Thank you both 3 for representing Suffolk. 4 Congratulations again. 5 STUDENT TRUSTEE ONYINANYA: Thank 6 you. 7 SECRETARY KANE: If I could for a 8 moment, we talk about promotion and 9 recruitment all the time, and some of 10 the new members of the board don't 11 realize that they're actually going to 12 become recruiters and promoters. And I 13 don't know whether you've been touched 14 already, Saul, or not to help somebody 15 in -- but I just stole a note from my 16 friend next store here to give you an 17 idea of what you're going to be in for. 18 "Dear Mrs. Belinda Alvarez, 19 "I'd like to thank you for your 20 enormous help with my financial aid 21 process and being there for me when I 22 really needed you once again. Your help 23 has allowed me to continue my education. 24 I truly thank you from the bottom of my 25 heart. I am thankful I was introduced 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 77 2 to you many years ago. I hope we can 3 still be in touch once again. I thank 4 you for all you've done for me. God 5 bless you each day," and so on. 6 But this is what you're going to be 7 doing, and she's done a wonderful job at 8 it. 9 (Applause) 10 SECRETARY KANE: One other thing, 11 Ernie, if I may. 12 George, I don't think we could have 13 gotten through this period without the 14 cooperation of the faculty here on this 15 30 percent increase. And if it would be 16 all right, if -- 17 Ellen, if you just stand up for a 18 minute and give us a board overview of 19 what your people have really done to 20 bring us into this. 21 That's my birthday present. 22 PRESIDENT SCHULER-MAUK: 150 years 23 and -- no. 24 It really began last spring when we 25 had a conversation with President Gatta, 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 78 2 Executive Vice President Shaun McKay, 3 Vice President Canniff, and Ilene 4 Kreitzer to talk about how we were going 5 to move ahead. None of us knew what was 6 going to happen, we just -- you know, we 7 knew that the applications for the 8 college were up and that -- by, I think, 9 30 percent, and that was enough to send 10 shock waves that it had to be something 11 new. We couldn't add buildings. We 12 knew that going forward we had no 13 additional money from the -- from the 14 state, we had no additional money from 15 the county that we could count on, and 16 how we were going to be able to, you 17 know, address this. 18 And so, you know, one of the things 19 that the college had done that -- that I 20 think impressed the union leadership, 21 was that there was a lot of 22 thoughtfulness in advance in terms of 23 how to accommodate so many additional 24 students. 25 In the past, you know, when we've 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 79 2 had bursts of enrollment that had been 3 unanticipated, we were all kind of 4 flying by the seat of our pants in many 5 respects. 6 But the college had gone around and 7 they had looked at all of the classrooms 8 and they done a site review. Because we 9 have some classrooms that can hold 10 probably 35 students comfortably. We 11 have some other classrooms in some of 12 our buildings, like the Riverhead 13 building on the Ammerman Campus, where 14 you can squeeze in maybe 24. And we 15 have other classrooms that have been 16 retrofitted for computer stations which 17 can't hold any more stations than 20. 18 And, you know, the computer programs for 19 class size had been developed when 20 everything was just kind of a square box 21 and before we had all of these. 22 And so I think what helped us kind 23 of begin to brainstorm as to what we 24 could do is when the college came in and 25 said, Well, we've done a site review of 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 80 2 all of the classrooms, and we're going 3 to program those classrooms that can't 4 hold any more than what the stations are 5 or what the actual seat capacity is. 6 And we want to then look at the class 7 size to see if we can't move forward and 8 come up with some solution that will not 9 overtax the students and overtax the 10 faculty members, and yet continue to 11 maintain, you know, the academic 12 integrity of our programs. 13 The union, you know, as we are 14 one to do, has always maintained the 15 class -- the maximum class size document 16 so that we knew exactly, you know, what 17 the class sizes should be, what we would 18 agreed to. And so we looked at that. 19 We looked at the different courses, and 20 that's when we came up with the thought 21 that we could do a plus-two in all of 22 those courses that did not have what we 23 call hard limits either because of 24 equipment or because of the nature of 25 the class; and we're primarily talking 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 81 2 about writing and developmental courses 3 that we thought that we could do this, 4 and as long as it was on a -- a fixed 5 period of time. 6 I mean, everyone's willing to -- to 7 give an extra effort if they know that 8 that effort's going to kind of end at 9 some point. So it wasn't just kind of 10 an open-ended, you know, just keep on 11 adding to it, but -- but we all knew 12 that there was going to be a rush for 13 our services. 14 And part of this also was that, 15 after we got through the rush of the 16 fall semester, that the union and the 17 college would sit down and we would look 18 at what we're going to do for the 19 spring. We'll anticipate it being 20 large. And then going forward, what do 21 we need in terms of actual staffing to 22 continue the programs, particularly in 23 terms of more full-time faculty because 24 we're sorely under that in terms of even 25 getting to the goal of the Trustees of 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 82 2 70 percent of the day classes when we 3 talk about full-time faculty. 4 So from the union standpoint, I 5 think what -- what made us kind of 6 embrace this brainstorming and embrace 7 this plan was that there was a plan and 8 that we were going to move forward 9 together and that it was going to be, 10 you know, a collaborative and collegial 11 effort to best address the students and 12 to make sure that the -- you know, the 13 faculty and the staff were part of that 14 decision making. So that's what we're 15 looking at. 16 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: Thank you. 17 SECRETARY KANE: Wonderful. 18 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: We thank you and 19 the students thank you as well. 20 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Just two 21 things, if I could. 22 One, we will be spending much of 23 the fall semester dealing with the 24 planning process that Ellen has just 25 described, and we've done a lot of the 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 83 2 work up front, but, you know, we need to 3 wrestle with the -- the question of how 4 many faculty we need, do -- more faculty 5 do we need in certain areas. How many 6 full-time faculty -- you know, how do we 7 deal with the issue of some of our 8 remedial courses. And there have been 9 recommendations, and when I have a plan, 10 I'll bring it to the board of how do we 11 bring down the number of students in 12 certain remedial sections, because it's 13 the right thing to do academically. 14 But that all has to be part of a 15 bigger plan. So how do we deal with the 16 spring, and then as we begin to craft 17 the 2010-2011 budget, how do we build in 18 the resources -- the human resource side 19 to match with the fiscal resources that 20 we may have available. 21 So we'll be spending a great deal 22 of time on that this semester on the -- 23 on the campuses talking to faculty, 24 working with the executive deans, and 25 working, obviously, with -- with my team 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 84 2 in the administration and the board to 3 advance something that, you know, gets 4 us a solution -- a longer term solution 5 to the problem. And you'll see a number 6 of those points in the State of the 7 College Address. 8 And just one last thing. I forgot 9 to introduce our new Executive Dean from 10 the Ammerman Campus, Dr. James Sherwood, 11 he's with us today. 12 Dr. Sherwood, welcome. 13 (Applause) 14 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Any other 15 comments, questions, statements? 16 TRUSTEE GERMANO: Yeah, I have a 17 question, and -- and then based on what 18 the answer is, I may have a follow-up. 19 Does the college have a -- sort of 20 like an environmental -- a green 21 committee? I know everybody's talking 22 about going green and saving the 23 environment; is there something that's 24 established or -- 25 Just very briefly. I came across 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 85 2 an outstanding product that I think 3 would be not only useful in terms of 4 environmental care, but it's also cost 5 saving. And I just don't know if 6 there's a committee or the Trustees 7 handle this or where this should be 8 brought up, this idea or at least this 9 inquiry, to pursue if, in fact, this is 10 something the college might want to look 11 into or have someone make a presentation 12 about -- I'm not sure how that works. 13 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: George. 14 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: We do -- 15 we do have committees on each of the 16 campuses. We also have a committee 17 that's looking at, you know, green 18 curricula and -- and green initiatives. 19 When we developed the new workforce 20 building, there was the intention to 21 make sure that it was built to LEAD 22 standards; we surpassed silver and we -- 23 I believe we achieved gold standards. 24 If it comes to specific products, 25 that's something that would be discussed 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 86 2 with -- on -- on the campus level with 3 the executive deans and their director 4 of plan operation. 5 So we do have committees in place 6 to deal with issues like that. 7 TRUSTEE GERMANO: So you would 8 steer me towards someone I could talk to 9 about that? 10 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: George could. 11 TRUSTEE GERMANO: Okay. Thank you. 12 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: Oh, the 13 county executive published his budget 14 yesterday. I don't know if anybody had 15 a chance to review it to determine 16 whether it had any effect on the 17 college. I know the police department 18 got whacked. 19 INTERIM PRESIDENT GATTA: Well, 20 our -- you know, the county's 21 contribution is adopted. Our -- you 22 know, our budget in their contribution 23 towards us was adopted in June. So -- 24 normally in August. So the county 25 executive's budget for his next year 1 SCCC Board of Trustees 9/17/09 87 2 beginning January 1 would have no effect 3 on the contribution that they've already 4 adopted for us. That needs to be built 5 in to -- that's a given in his budget 6 that he presents. So the answer is, no, 7 there won't be an impact. 8 VICE CHAIRMAN HAZLITT: Thank you. 9 CHAIRMAN MATTACE: Okay.
