World Wide Web Resource Guidelines

The following guidelines apply to resource allocations for WWW accounts and services at SCCC. Eligibility for WWW resources are defined in the college's document, Eligibility and Procedures for Obtaining Internet Access and E-Mail Accounts. Acceptable use policies governing WWW publishing and services are identified in the college's IT Policies and Guidelines

Individual Students

• If part of a course assignment, individual students may create web pages.  See the section on Classes below. 
• The Office of Computer and Information Systems does not currently have the resources to provide direct support to students for developing home pages. If questions arise, students should direct these to the faculty member for the course requiring the web assignment.
• Appropriate use policies for college network accounts apply to home pages. Students are responsible for adhering to these policies in order to maintain access to WWW resources.

Student Organizations

• Recognized student organizations are allowed up to 2 Mb of server storage for home pages. A campus's student activities department may wish to obtain or share in the purchase of a student-based Internet server, if additional organization space is required.
• The Office of Student Activities and faculty sponsor of each organization are responsible for the content of the student organization's home page.
• The SCCC home page will have a pointer to "Student Organizations" from a campus's listing.
• Student organizations home pages are not official college publications and are to include a notice to this effect, along with a listing of the organization officers and faculty advisor.
• The page will include a "mail to" feature for comments.

Departments

• Departments are allowed up to 10 Mb of server storage for home pages and WWW information publishing. Departments may acquire their own server if additional space is needed. Departmental servers are the responsibility of the individual department.
• Department chairs or administrators are responsible for the content of departmental Web pages.
• Department Web Pages may be setup for internal (Intranet) use and/or for external (Internet) use. Internet accessible pages are college publications and subject to the same review as publications in print form. Un-reviewed material should be clearly identified as "drafts" or "proposed." Contact the College Director of Publications for further information.
• Individual campus listings will have pointers to "Departments." Additional pointers may be provided for service departments.
• Departments are responsible for maintaining that their WWW documents and links are current and accurate.
• The Office of Computer and Information Systems is not responsible for the development or maintenance of home pages. As time and resources permit, training, documentation, and consulting services may be available, either directly from the Computer Center or through separately funded projects.
• A department home page will include a "mail to" feature for comments back to the department chair/administrator or designee.

Classes

• Web pages related to class assignments may be created in class accounts.

FYI: A student's work is considered part of the student's educational record and is subject to privacy protection. A student's work should not be accessible to others in the class without a student's written permission. (Added 9/97 for informational purposes on the recommendation of the Vice President for Management and Planning.)

• Faculty should discuss requirements with the Computer Center at least a semester in advance to assure resource availability and work out publishing logistics.
• Course faculty are responsible for the content of class pages and are expected to oversee publishing activities. Passwords to transfer files to publishable directories are not to be shared with students.
• Links to the SCCC home page and from an academic department's pages may be implemented if the project warrants college publication. Department chairs are responsible for this decision as these pages then become subject to the departmental guidelines identified above.
• Class projects may be moved to individual or department Internet accounts when a class is over. All home pages in class accounts will be deleted when the accounts are deleted at the end of a class.
• The Office of Computer and Information Systems is not responsible for the development or maintenance of class pages. As time and resources permit, training, documentation, and consulting services may be available to individual faculty members, either directly from the Computer Center or through separately funded projects.

Faculty and Staff

• Faculty and staff are allowed to create individual home pages in their Internet accounts.
• Appropriate use policies for network access apply to home pages. Faculty and staff members are responsible for adhering to these to maintain access to WWW resources.
• It is expected that individual home pages that are not directly related to the college's instructional, administrative, or student service activities will be developed on individual's own time.
• The Office of Computer and Information Systems does not currently have the resources to provide direct support to individuals for developing home pages. Individuals should complete the recommended course of study in Internet Publishing before developing Web pages.
