SCCC Guideline for Web Accessibility:
Adopted by SCCC Web Accessibility Committee
on November 14, 2000 Suffolk County Community College strives to
provide equal access for educational opportunities to all its students. Therefore, the
college supports SUNYs accessibility recommendation and adopts the W3Cs Web
Accessibility Initiative, Priority 1 as its minimum standard for its Web pages as listed
below:
- All pages stored on college servers that are linked from the colleges home pages
will meet the Priority 1 standard. This includes but is not limited to administrative,
academic, departmental, faculty, student service, student activity, and student
organization pages.
- The college recognizes that it cannot control the compliance of external sources. When
choosing to link to an external document, college page developers should consider the
accessibility of the information from these sites and proceed according to the
recommendations published in the SCCC Web Development Accessibility Guidelines. The
college will recommend that the sites of its corporate and organizational partners provide
accessible pages, particularly where these pages are linked from the college.
- All online instruction, instructional support pages and student assignments published to
the Web, either through a course management system or directly, will be compliant if a
student registered in the course requires this level of access to participate. The
college, however, will work to make all online material accessible.
- All personal pages on college servers will be accessible if they are linked as noted in
item 1 above or if an individual invites the community to view it. The invitation could
include posting the URL on a list serve, discussion list, or in a handout.
- The college will work to educate its students on the need for developing accessible
pages. As an institution of higher education, it is important that SCCC foster an
atmosphere of equality and diversity.
Why a Guide is Necessary:
The guide helps in the designing of pages to insure Suffolk County Community College's
meeting ADA requirements. The guide provides style sheet guidelines and information on
helping web page designers meet Priority 1 approval.
Who Uses this Guide:
Web page designers for administrative, academic, departmental, faculty,
student service, student activity, and student organization pages. To help facilitate
Priority 1 compliance we are providing design guide information. This information is found
in many places on the Web. We are consolidating this information for SCCC personnel to
minimize time spent in searching for solutions.
Please review the disclaimer notice below when linking to a
non-compliant page or website.
Priority 1 Approval:
Priority 1 conformance is easily checked by going to Bobby.
Enter the URL of the page that you want Bobby to examine and click Submit. This dialog
will only test one page at a time. If you wish to test an entire site as a batch, use the downloadable version of Bobby.
After Bobby reviews your page you will see the following statement:
" This web page does not contain any Priority 1 accessibility errors that Bobby
can detect. However, certain items require human judgment; these are listed below. Please
review these items; if none of these apply to your page, it qualifies for Bobby Approved
status".
Review the items requiring human judgment, make a change on your page if you feel it is
appropriate for the message you are trying to convey. Bobby only recommends you review
these comments.
Procedure When Linking to External URLs:
When connecting to an external URL it is recommended that the URL be
checked for Priority 1 compliance by using the BOBBY testing resource.
If the external URL is non-compliant an email should be forwarded to the
administrator of that site advising them of the non-compliance and asking them if and when
they plan to be compliant. The return email should be maintained in your file for future
follow-up.
Disclaimer When Linking to External URLs:
It is necessary when linking to an external URL that is non-compliant
that we use the following disclaimer:
"The links provided on this page may or may not be compliant with
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of July 26, 1990".
