Suffolk County Community College is the largest multi-campus community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling over 22,000 students each semester. SCCC offers 69 degree and certificate programs in business, communications, the arts, computing, health, community and human services, liberal arts, and technical, scientific and engineering studies. By 2005, the college had graduated more than 86,312 persons.
In accordance with the mission of the college, SCCC provides universal access to higher education, prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions, prepares students for a first career, a career change, or career advancement, and assists underprepared students in acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to increase their career and educational opportunities. Through the College Success Program and the Honors Program, as well as many other specialized programs, SCCC attracts talented and motivated students. In fact, SCCC is one of the leading community colleges in the nation in producing Phi Theta Kappa Academic All-Americans.
Many SCCC students transfer to four-year colleges and universities to complete their baccalaureate degree. SCCC has active articulation agreements with almost thirty baccalaureate-granting institutions, including virtually all of the institutions on Long Island and many other highly respected colleges, both within and outside of SUNY. SCCC has also developed joint admissions programs with more than a dozen of these same institutions. In addition, SCCC prepares students to enter the workforce upon graduation in such marketable areas as health information technology, opticianry, paralegal studies, nursing, culinary arts and many other fields.
With an average class size of 23, students are able to engage in learning environments with highly qualified and dedicated faculty. The College’s libraries provide organized and accessible collections of print, audiovisual, and electronic resources, as well as access to remote information resources. Academic computing labs are established at each of the campuses to provide a full range of computing services to students, and through the Academic Skills and Learning Centers, the College offers all students an opportunity to sharpen their academic skills in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
SCCC has invested heavily in technology and currently all classrooms have network connections. The College is moving to a mobile environment and, through the use of wireless technology, will provide services to students with mobile computing devices. In the area of online education, SCCC offers comprehensive core education and specialized courses of study, providing students with the opportunity to launch into a transfer program or directly into the workforce. The College also boasts the fourth largest distance education program within SUNY.
SCCC provides a full range of services for students at each campus, including counseling/advising, career education, disability and health services, child care, student life and multicultural activities, performing arts activities, and athletics. The Activities Office on each campus coordinates a comprehensive program of co-curricular activities which provides opportunities for working on the student newspaper, participating in student governance, or joining a club that enhances the quality of any student’s total educational experience.
