Spring Break? Not for These Volunteers

The Suffolk County Community College Grant Campus Rotary Club is volunteering their time off in an Alternative Spring Break from March 29 - April 4.

The group – six students in all -- will work with Feed America San Diego, an organization that helps with hunger relief, and Father Joe's Village, a local homeless shelter. The Suffolk students will distribute food and meet with homeless individuals to hear their stories and learn about their lives.

The students learned about food insecurity -- the measure of the lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members, or the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food insecurity is widespread in both New York and San Diego, regions that share similar economic factors where working families sometimes do not earn enough money to support a healthy food lifestyle.

While in San Diego, the group will also do their part for the environment by volunteering with the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and helping to eliminate invasive species.

The Suffolk County Community College Grant Campus Rotary Club is a satellite branch of Rotary Club International. Rotary Club International are neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.
