Your actions should be determined by the circumstances and where you are in relation to the shooter. Stay alert to your surroundings and decide whether to run, hide or take action.
This is generally your best option. Make it a habit to always be aware of possible exits.
Don’t run blindly. Create a mental escape route away from the threat as you move.
Leave your belongings behind.
Keep your hands visible so responding officers know you are not a threat.
2. Hide Out
If running is not an option, hide in an area out of the shooter’s view.
Block entry to your hiding place. Lock or jam the door, pile up furniture, do anything to discourage entry.
Silence all mobile devices.
3. Take Action
As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
Act with physical aggression. In this situation, your best defense is to surprise your attacker by going on the offensive. Throw items at the shooter, try to knock the weapon away, physically assault the assailant – do whatever it takes to survive.
As soon as it is safe to do so, call for help. Stay calm and provide the following information:
Location of the shooter;
Number of shooters;
Physical description of shooters;
Number and the type of weapons being used;
Number of potential victims at the location.
When law enforcement arrives:
Remain calm and follow all instructions.
Put down any items in your hands (bags, jackets, anything) so responders don’t mistake it for a weapon.
Raise your hands, keep them visible and spread your fingers.
Avoid quick movements towards officers and do not hold on to them.
Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling.
Do not stop to ask officers for help or assistance with exiting, unless directed to do so by an officer.
